Good morning!
My mechanic just received the wiring harness for the engine compartment in my '78SC, and the harness ended up being just that, an engine compartment harness. The reason I say this is I thought it went all the way forward to the front of the car, when in fact it seems to end at the rear of the transmission tunnel. Can anyone tell me how many major harnesses the car has? I've looked at wiring diagrams, but cannot determine how many primary harnesses are involved. I'm assuming there might be 3 major harnesses, the engine compartment harness, a harness that goes from the engine compartment to the front of the car, and a trunk/dash harness. He's going to take the car apart, including dropping the engine/transmission, to replace the engine harness, and while the car is completely apart, I'm thinking we might consider replacing some of the other harnesses as well. Any help would be most appreciated!! Thanks eveyone!! ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |

Alright, here is what I did to renew my wiring harnesses:
First, remove the entire harness and look it over for bubbling on the covering. STart there if you find any. Remove the entire covering from the harness and all its branches and be sure to use scotch tape around all the branches to keep them seperate from the main harness (makes it MUCH easier upon re assembly). Examine the wires carefully and check for melting or brittleness. Should you find either of the above stated replace either that entire wire or only the dammaged part with some quality automotive wire (this can be bought anywhere). After you check the entire harness over you will be able to track down your initial problem and find any possible sites of further problems. This task should be able to be done in an afternoon and I wouldn't suggest paying the mechanic to do it, its very easy. Finally, you'll want to get some quality harness wrap or shrink tubing and seal up the harness again. As far as I know, used quality harnesses are hard to get because they are year and option specific and they are usualy sold either with the engine or the chassis. Take car and and keep asking questions, eventually it will save you more money than you'll believe. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |
