Oil Temp gauge dead

Hello,

I am both, a new member on these forums and a new Porsche owner (she's a 1979 911SC Targa beauty...)

The car itself is in great shape, just a few things still need attention. One of them is a non working Oil Temperature Gauge.

Can somebody please tell me what part do I need to make the Oil Temperature Gauge work? The gauge itself is good, but the sensor or "thermometer" is dead. My apologies for this crude wording, but English is not my native language and I am no mechanic, either. My friend is, but neither of us could find the right part in the Porsche catalogue.

Thank you in advance!

Regards from Slovenia,
Jure

Welcome, Jure!
Oil Temperature gauge Calibration????

The sender is in the catalog, click on the tabs above in the banner. Why do you think the gauge is bad?

Verify what is good or bad. You may simply have a loose wire.

Pat

Thanks, Pat!

My mechanic friend told me that he tested the gauge and it was ok. It's the Remote temperature sensor that's bad (finally got the name of the thing, thanks to your link and a very interesting read). I found it in the catalog alright, part No. OEM-90164163200. )

I'm trying to get the correct part from the USA because I cannot find it in Europe. I had some trouble translating the name of the part from German to English, hence this post.

I guess I'm pretty much hopeless when it comes to cars and I can see I have an interesting road ahead of me! But the 911 is such a lovely thing that I am more than willing to learn. This place looks like a great spot to start, by the way, a lot of very useful articles. And this forum is very lively, too.

Thanks again!

Jure

Jure,

Good luck with the car and be sure to post some photos of your new ride!

Be sure he is right. Run a separate wire from sensor to gauge input & see what happens. It can just be a long wire that runs outside the car.

If it works then, you will want to check the sensor wire itself.

If it does not work with an extra wire, then it has to be the sensor or the grounds.

Also, stick a multimeter on the sensor and to ground on the car. Check the resistance reading when the engine is hot & when it is cold. If they both give some resistance then the sensor is likely good.

RWebb, will check again. Thanks for the tip! As I said, I have a lot to learn and not enough time - at least not as much as I would like.

Jorge, here are a few pics just after I bought the car. It's an Euro spec car, exported to the USA and then imported back to EU. Engine rebuilt 8000 miles ago, not a rust spot anywhere, but a bit scruffy looking. The Targa roof need some attention, a few bumps to iron out on the body and such. Mechanically it is in very good condition. I since replaced the headlights with European style Bosch's and the rear lights are now orange to conform to the rules over here.
