Price check: 1971 911T

I need a price check (more like recommendation) on a 71 911T Targa. Sorry I don't have pics, wasn't really expecting for the guy to be willing to sell it. In short, here's what I know, will be going back Monday for a more thorough look:

- 71 WT Targa, all original,
- Supposedly engine was cranked 3 months ago, looks VERY worn
- No dents, panels are seems in very good condition, original paint, surface rust across engine lid, hood, and top of front fenders, wil need a complete strip down and repaint
- Targa top material torn, needs to be rebuilt
- Entire interior needs to be replaced, door pockets warped, seats torn, carpet old/faded/torn, dash cracked (bad)
- All chrome in place and decent shape
- Forgot to check miles
- Floor pan good, no rust
- Battery area good, no rust
- Original wheels, hub cabs, no fuchs

Essentially a complete restore but no major rust to deal with. The engine will need to be refreshed at a minimum, cares needs a complete repaint.

So, what say ye? This would be a long term project for me...will try to get some pics up Monday if possible, but would like to close asap before he changes his mind.

With this description, it will never be worth as much as you put into it, so what are you willing to throw away?

If the interior and exterior were let go to the extent you are sharing, you can bet the motor is not in great shape - and that's major dollars unless you are a DIYr. I would probably offer $5K with the full expectation that to make this car worthwhile, you are going to drop a buttttttt-load of money in it.

Don't make my mistake by buying one on the cheap with the intention of restoring it, and have it eat you alive (or at least out of house and home).

Buy the best car you can afford - stretch if you have to - but always, ALWAYS, get a PPI.

Given that you can buy a really nice '71T for mid-20's, how can you justify buying a car that will need a complete repaint, complete interior, an engine rebuild, a rebuilt targa top, and probably quite a bit spent on the rest of the mechanical components, all of the rubber bits, etc? There's no way you can do all of that for $20k or $30K, even if you do much of the work yourself.

There is a guy restoring an old 911 at the moment (HarriTiidus) and posting pictures and descriptions of his project. You should take a look at what he is having to do and start adding up the costs. It's not cheap and lots of the parts are drying up. There are lots of things you just can't buy for these cars any more.

It is always cheaper to buy somebody else's finished restoration.

I have just sent a rhd 911t coupe to the car gods in the sky!. ( RUST) It was my first Porsche, a three year project that ended in tears. I have learned my lesson.

Hide all reciepts from the wife!!,

Get your local Porsche mechanic to look at the car before purchase. Pay them their call out fee or shout them a box of beer. It will be the best money you will ever spend. they can also give a price guide and will probably keep a lookout for parts for you.

There is always another deal so tick all the boxes in your wish list before you rush into purchase.

Call Joe @ 727-804-4992. He has purchased a few in this condition recently and would clue you to a fairly exact value. It does sound to be a $5000 to $6000 car.

Are you a DIY'r or a check writer?

To me the only thing that matters is amount of rust on the tub. Completeness would be a very, very, very close second. Beyond that there are work-arounds that don't involve brand new parts and $80/hr mechanics.....IF you DIY.

Was the car stored inside? How do you reconcile rusty lids and fenders and a bad targa top with non rusted floors?

I believe we all make mistakes but I will not validate your poor choices and/or perversions and subsidize the results your actions.

JR nailed it -- and DON'T WORRY - any 911 will have lots and lots of DIY "opportunities."

Also, there will be more cares at lower prices as the dip or recession or whatever takes a deeper hold on the economy.
