Retrofitting Early Chrome Mirrors on Flag Mirror SC or Carrera?

I greatly prefer the early chrome or black mirrors from '73-'75, PN 911-731-013-01-M100, vs. the later flag mirrors.

Can these be retrofitted easily to '78 or later flag mirror cars without having to repair or repaint the door exterior?

Thanks for the advice.

Bob

Hey Bob,

The holes are different. So you will have to fill the holes on the sc door panel and put new holes in to adhere the chrome mirror to the door. At least that is what it looks like to me. I even have one of the chrome mirrors ready to install.

The holes are quite large, can't remember exactly but there are two supports at the bottom and one for the cable and I think another for the mounting that pulls the mirror tight against the door. The smaller chrome mirror base won't cover all those holes, especially the ones way down at the bottom for the supports. You would have to weld them closed and repaint the door. I don't know if someone has another solution.

That's what I thought, just not what I wanted to hear.

Does any one have pictures and measurements of the holes from the flag mirrors? I'm now thinking I may just form a small sheet metal cover plate, painted body color, to place under the early mirrors to cover the flag mount holes. Not perfect, but functional and better than repainting the entire door.

Here is a diagram of the passenger side mirror. It would probably be easier to take the mirror off and make a template that way.

Take the time to take the mirror off correctly. There are a lot of wires that go up into the mirror and ideally you would disconnect those first. To disconnect the wires you have to remove the glass. If you have an SC Bentley manual on pages 660-2 you will see the entire process. If you don't care about the wiring you can just cut it and then remove the mirror using an allen key at the base of the mirror housing.
