Brake disc question

All:

Should I replace my front discs with OEM or go slotted/drilled? The front discs on my '89 3.2 are scored. I am going to have them turned when I put on new pads and brake lines, but if they are too thin to turn I will have to replace them.
Can I put on slotted/drilled discs with the standard caliper/pad setup? Can I do this to the front and leave the rear stock? Will slotted/drilled discs improve anything? (99% street use) Is OEM the only way to go or is there an alternative that is of similar/better quality?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Paul,
You may want to do a search on slotted or drilled rotors, as many have posted on the subject.
I recall reading on some cracking of the slotted or was that drilled rotors. I'm sure it depends on your intended use...DE, AX, trackdaze

Paul,

My best advice would be to use a premium rotor; either OEM (Ate is better than Zimmerman) or Brembo. I prefer plain rotors on these particular cars but properly slotted ones are OK, too.

Cross-drilled ones do not hold up as well since these smallish rotors were never meant to be drilled (after manufacture) and tend to crack easily.

FWIW, I NEVER, EVER turn rotors since all that does is accelerate their demise. If they are worn, they get replaced.

Thanks Guys.

I'll order new rotors. I did a search and started reading- huge amount of info out there- but I think OEM (ATE) or Brembo will be best for now. I did a search but all I could find was Zimmerman rotors available from our host- am I missing something? Also, do I need to replace front and rears at the same time?

Cheers,

Paul.

No, you can do them separately...Unless the retailer sells them as a set only.

I upgraded to the PowerSlot Cryo rotors last year on my 86 Carrera.

No rust when the car sits (its primarily a track toy), and improved braking performance (15 track days over since I installed)

Hey Paul,
I did the project you are about to do last summer. New front discs, front pads, SS lines all around and fresh Ate blue fluid.
I used these front rotors as they were same size but seem to offer a few benefits, besides the good price.
http://www.ate-na.com/generator/www/us/en/ate/ate/themes/20_ate_brake_products/1_rotors_us.html
I used Hawk HPS pads too. They combo seems great. It took a couple weeks for them to really break in but now they are firm and so little dust compared to what was on there that it's amazing.
Give me a call if you want more info.
