915 trans look-up question, what is this gearbox?
Hello there. Does anyone have a factory spec book?? Looking to see what this trans is and what its from. the numbers from bottom are 915/61/7198434. The gear box has been exposed to the elements for a cpl of years and wondering what might be expected of a gearbox that has seen full exposure for this time frame?? Im guessing that it will need a freshening or is it just a parts box?? Thanks for any info given and opinions expressed. This gearbox is behind a guys house not in the car, lol.

The 915/61 is a gearbox found in 911sc's. It was initially offered as a magnesium case and then they kept the same type number and made it aluminum. It should have an 8:31 ring and pinion in it, but these things are getting old enough you never know.
As for the condition, you can't really tell all that much from the outside. Whether or not it was stored empty or full often makes a difference. The oil can protect the parts from rusting. But if water gets in there, it won't matter because it will rust whatever it hits. It's a crap shoot. With something like that, I would ask him if you can pull the sidecover of the diff. to inspect the ring and pinion before you buy the box. If it's just been sitting there, he likely won't take issue with that. You'll just need a 13mm wrench and a rubber mallet to get into it... |
Thanks matt, any idea what to offer for the crap, shoot? Guy says he bought it for a project which never materialized so its been sitting a long while. Im guessing try and buy it for parts and might get lucky...? Any one with any ideas of value?? |
