Front shock replacement - 911 1984
I have a 911 Carrera Targa 1984. I am replacing my shocks at the front axle. I have two questions.
How can I remove the brake disc from the axle. I have a strange looking nut on the front wheel. How can I open this up? What tool do I need? I removed the 5 screws/nuts that hold the brake disc to the rotor but I can't get the disc off. ![]() ![]() ![]() Second question. How do I remove the front shock from the strut? In the 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 it is mentioned to remove the roll pin at the bottom of the shock before loosening any screws. The text says to hammer it out or drill it out. What is the best method. Why would you need to drill it out? ![]() Will the new shocks come with a new roll pin or do I order this separately? ![]() Also does it matter to what side you hammer it out? Will the roll pin slide out either side? Thanks.

That dust cap on the end of the axle has to come off first, then use an allen wrench to loosen the clamping effect on the axle nut. Just loosen that, no need to remove it. Then unscrew the axle nut off and pull off the entire hub. Be careful as the bearing will be loose and could drop out. BTW, the removal of the rotor is not necessary for removal of the shock, but I imagine you are replacing the rotor as well.
As far as the roll pin issue goes, can't help you there, my 86 does not have that type of strut. edit: BTW, there are a number of tech articles on the home page. Here is one for what you need to do. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_914_strut_removal/911_914_strut_removal.htm

If you are replacing only the insert? If yes, no need to remove the brake disk neither the pin. I did the job 2 months ago. Here is the sequence:
1- Remove the top nut of the strut: the one in the trunk 2- Press down the shock absorber to disengage it from the shock tower. Be careful to do not scratch the fender. 3- Remove the dust cover of the shock. 4- Unscrew the big nut. For the removal I used a 'monkey' wrench. It doesn't matter if you damage the old nut because you will replace it. 5- Pull the old shock absorber. 6- Clean the old oil 7- Put your new shock absorber and follow this sequence from stage 4 to 1. Good luck.

Buy the Bentley manual for the Carrera. It will take you step by step on how to do this along with most other maintenance chores/issues.

renders,
nice pictures. You might want to get a brake disc measuring caliper. You have a ridge going on those rotors, and they should be checked for wear. The wear limit should be etched into the edge of the rotor. where in Calif are you? |
