Rear Main Seal Smoke?
Looking at a 95' 993 to replace my 87' Targa. I have a good one lined up but whas thrown off by something the ownser said. He mentioned he was getting some smoke on start-up so they ended up replacing some seals. The rear main seal specifically. After thinking about it I don't know how that would cause smoke on startup. I'd be grateful for any thoughts.

Perhaps the rear main seal leak was finding its way onto the exhaust system. Then as the engine/heat exchangers heat up you are getting oil burn off from the exhaust? If that's the situation, you are looking at a significant rear main seal leak. Does the car have the engine belly pan installed?
If the current owner replaced the rear main, you need to drop the engine, remove the tranny, clutch & flywheel. Then R&R the rear main seal & reassemble. How many miles on the car? Did the owner do a clutch job while everything was out of the car? If he did a clutch job, I'd think he would want you to know that - that's a plus. If he didn't do the clutch, I would wonder what's going on with that car. I couldn't imagine pulling the motor & R&R the clutch assy without doing a clutch job while I was in there? I think you need lots more information and a PPI if you are serious about the car. I just bought a 96 993 & love it!!! Good luck. Ed
