Porsches at Amelia Island

I just got back from the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, and thought I'd post some Porsche pics from the event. I also have a few short videos, but I haven't posted them to YouTube yet. As soon as I do I will send the links.

There were a handful of Porsches that went across the block at the RM auction, but this 1979 Turbo was my favorite. It was listed as "Chiffon Yellow" over chocolate leather, but looked cream-colored to me. Is this a factory color? This car has 17k original miles and was absolutely perfect. It sold for $37k.

One of the prettiest early 4-cam Carreras I have ever seen. They all seem to be silver, and this metallic gray was stunning.

This 550 was the Paris Auto Salon show car, and then was immediately raced heavily for most of its life by Jean Behra and others. It won best in class.

I've always lusted after the 904, and this one was impeccable inside and out.

Here's a 908...

And one of Bob Akin's old 935's. It one a class trophy.

And Danny Ongais' ill-fated Porsche indycar...

And perhaps weirdest of all, a factory-built 928 four-door, which was apparently constructed by Porsche as a one-off for the owner of the America Sunroof Company, with whom Porsche had a close relationship. Burgundy on burgundy is not my favorite color combo, but the car was interesting to say the least...

I have more - of the "Moby Dick" 935, a gorgeous pre-A roadster, and detail shots of most of these cars, plus a video of the blue 550 Spyder driving by after picking up its class win. Hurley Haywood was there, as was David Hobbes and Peter Egan and loads of other luminaries. If you've never been to Amelia, I highly recommend you check it out one of these years.

Great Pics!
Did you happen to see Chuck Beck with his 904 replica's?
He was supposed to be there as a Vendor.

The 928 was built supposedly for the owner of Golde sunroofs I have done quite a bit of work to that 928.

Really? I don't think he was there, because I think I would have noticed that!

Here are some others.

This 356 went across the auction block, but I wasn't in the tent at the time, so I don't know what it sold for...

A gorgeous RS on the lawn. Didn't win anything, though.

Not a Porsche, but this Abarth Fiat 850 Nurburgring generated more attention than almost anything else in the auction and sold for (what I thought was) an astonishing price of $67k.

A Brumos 934/5 on the lawn.

An early Brumos 935

A Brumos RSR on the lawn

One of the early East African Safari rally cars in the Glasurit booth...

Hot Mercedes-Benz roadsters, then and now.

I could have looked at the French cars all day. Considering these Delahayes and Talbot Lagos and the like were designed and built in the mid 1930's it's amazing how far ahead of their time they really were. Photos never do these cars justice.

Whenever I hear the term "sports-racing car" I think of this - the Maserati 450S. Apparently this thing is beastly fast, with something like 440bhp. Sexy, fast and everything that was ever great about Maserati...

Did you happen to notice the Datsun 510 sitting next to the 904. From the initials on the door, it had a pretty famous driver.

Yes, I did see that car, but I didn't look too closely at it. It was parked right next to an Alfa GTV race car. It turned out that the two cars had raced each other extensively in the period, but the cars hadn't been together at the time since. Kind of a cool story.

But who drove the 510? I didn't catch that...

I saw this car when it was new (or it's evil twin), and the owner of the dealership - Jerry Nelson of Schneider+Nelson, Eatontown - said it was special order "Vanilla Ice Cream" over dark brown (chocolate) interior.
The car has been stuck in memory since 1979.

Absolutely stunning, thanks for posting

Yeah, I agree. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the original owner was Al Holbert Jr, so it had a little bit of Porsche celebrity provenance.

I WANTED IT.

That 550 use to be owned to my father in law... He sold it at the end of last year. It is a STUNNING machine even before they painted it french racing blue....which is the color it started out with. It's nice to see it again!

Sorry, no. I forgot the name, but it was listed as "the only car ever to be produced in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area." It was some kind of Porsche-powered funky kit car thing, where the entire front of the canopy lifted forward to allow entry. Very strange.

Oh, and the silver paint had more metalflake in it than a 1970's speedboat. Both that and the 4-door 928 were in section called "cars you've never seen."
