I am in the process of restoring my 69 911. I need to make a decision on a windshield. I know German glass would be correct for the car, but is it worth the extra cost? Thanks.

Unless you are going to make a complete garage queen out of your car, or make it into the ultimate show car, I would say it isn't worth the extra expense. You are going to drive it, and there is a chance for the windshield to have a rock hit it. I would get glass from PPG.

The German glass is slightly thinner on the outer layer and is subsequently a bit lighter. The German glass is also softer. I would think the US glass would be less likely to pit from road debris.

If you do go with aftermarket glass, make sure you examine the windscreen carefully before you buy it. A lot of domestic glass is cheaply made with large amounts of air bubbles and imperfections.

Domestic glass is stronger, harder, and cheaper to replace. Unless you're showing the thing, I don't see a reason to go with the German.

Not sure about a 69, but I just had the windshield on my 90 Cab replaced by Safelite through my repair shop and German glass was the only choice. Also lightened my wallet about $1200.

The 964 and later have a larger windshield with a smaller seal that fits the same opening. They all have the antennae built in. They are much more expensive than the 65-89 windshields.

Just priced a windshield for a 84 911. The shop had one in stock for $233 installed. Premium glass was special order for $575. I was told the only difference was the sticker in the corner.

I got a new domestic windsheild installed in my 82 930 and 70 S for $250 and $292 respectively. The "S" was more due to home delivery and installation by Safelite.

I bought my windshield, pre Pelican, for $475. Made by Safelite, or something. I have the integrated antenna. The german one was between $1200 - $650, best price.
First it was installed professionally, then redid the work myself. They messed up the seal. Wouldn't you know it, the third day I had a large rock chip placed sqare in the center where I look out onto the open road. BTW: After it was installed, I noticed there were many imperfections on the glass. Where I look through sitting in the car, I can see what appears to be some type of holding lines. As if there was something holding the windhield up while it was formed (hot?). Good luck ------------------ Nick Hromyak '85 Carrera 7 & 9 Fuchs Havin' Fun in Sacramento CA |
