Brad penn in regular cars???

82SC

I have followed many of the debate threads and the recent push to brad penn oil.

Question; would it (BP) be recommended for daily driver regular performance watercooled cars?

I have an 07 SRT8 cherokee that I use synthetic with but if the sc gets penn might as well put it in the jeep.

Thoughts?

I would be worried about your CAT. I think a modern vehicle was designed and is suppose to use a modern oil. Just my 0.02

I dont think it will effect the engine. one of the main reasons they have changed oils so much is emissions and catalyst failures. Definitely dont do it before your warranty is up, including your emissions warranty. just a thought.

What class of oil does the owners manual recommend?

I would have no fear about the cat being damaged by the Brad Penn - these cars were designed to run oils with Zn and P levels up to about 1450 ppm, which is what Redline, Swepco, all have. The biggest consideration about street use and drain interval is the oil's TBN, which the Brad Penn is ~10 and the Swepco is ~14, so both are good for daily drivers. Real racing oils and motorcycle oils typically have less detergents, so a lower starting TBN requiring more often changes, and usually have a bit more Zn and P at levels high enough to damage catalytic converters over the long term.

I know that even up to 2004, the owners manual called for an SH or SJ rated oil, and Brad Penn is SJ rated.

Regarding your SRT/8 Jeep, it's a totally different beast. What oil does it call for? Hopefully not a 5w20!
