Question Untidy Rear Reflector (Black Letters)

Hi,

The top surface of my center rear reflector is scratched and appears to be peeling. Not the whole surface, just patches. It looks untidy compared to the rest of the car.
Given the cost and rarity of the black letter versions of these reflectors, has anyone out there successfully polished off the top surface to an acceptable finish? If so any advice on polishing materials and technique would be appreciated.

I've "restored" quite a bit of plastic with Starbrite Plastic Restorer. It takes scratches out of signal lenses, clears up eisenglass (those clear, flexible boat windows), and any other plastic. You might give it a shot.

Unhappy

My problem is with the interior black lettering which has started to fade. Any suggestions to enhance the contrast?

Not sure if this is an okay place to post this - it may belong in the classifieds. Oh well, here goes...

I do not know anything about plastic restoration, but I do have a black letter reflector in great condition that I'd sell for a reasonable price. It is a reflector with black lettering and threaded studs, not clips.

The PO of my '72 did a post-74 update panel and had this reflector as a spare. I am restoring to the early look so I do not need any of this stuff. I'll would be willing to either sell it or trade for early rear bumper parts (license plate panel, etc.).

I can send digital pictures if you're interested. Let me know.

Thanks,
Charlie

Well, I don't particularly care for plastic or great big tail lights. In addition I don't want any more reflectorized surface for the gestapo to reflect their laser beams. I painted mine black to match the rest of the 79 SC! (Don't worry purists! It needed some bodyfiller to smooth out 23 years of abuse.)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I prefer not to opt for a replacement because I'm considering changing the front and rear look to a C2 next winter, which necessitates new lights and reflector anyway. This is just a tidy-up exercise on the cheap, if that's possible.

I will seek out the Starbrite, but I wonder if it's abrasive enough to level the top surface i.e. clear off the remaining unpeeled layer? It sounds the most attractive option though because it can be done in situ.
