Anywhere that would accept early calipers as cores and send rebuilt one?

I have excellent braking but one bleeder is being picky. I have 4 core calipers from another 1966 that I would like to have rebuilt and installed. Is there anywhere that will exchange them out. I know there are a couple rebuilders but I think 4 calipers goes for like $1000?

Have you talked to Eric Shea? It's been a while since I touched base with him, so I don't know what his current rates are. If you don't know how to contact him, drop me a line. He does fabulous work...

Yea, that is what I was going to suggest. I know Eric does 914 calipers that way.

Have you tried http://www.classicandspeedparts.com/. I have been pretty happy with thier service.

I may have to do this myself! Those prices are fair but $1,000 for caliper rebuilds is a ton of money!

I think if I strip out the calipers and remove the through bolts I can do a good clean up and rebuild. Anywhere to buy new throughbolts and stainless steel pistons?

911Freak 03-17-2008 11:37 AM

Are these the "M" calipers?
There are paces where you could buy remand calipers and get an upgrade WAAY cheaper than 1k! You could get an upgrade and not even send in your calipers and get a big perf gain..

Here's a link to "M" calipers for MY upto '75

Send them to White Post Restorations. There are plenty of areas to save money but brakes ain't one of them.

carolinatrophy 03-17-2008 12:16 PM

Doesn't Vertex do that?

LakeCleElum 03-17-2008 01:02 PM

Highway robbery......I had a local brake place do the 4 on my 73.5 for $165 back in about 1994. I recently called to have them do the ones on my '69 and they don't do Porsche calipers anymore. Sad.

defcon65 03-17-2008 01:07 PM

You can rebuild them yourself without too much trouble. The kits are cheap and the process fairly simple. Soak the calipers in kerosene to loosen fasteners and clean up the gunk. Once you get them apart you can inspect the cylinders, bores and caliper frames for damage and go from there; if they are damaged, don't rebuild. Otherwise just clean up the cylinder and bores with silicon carbide paper and light oil, degrease with brake cleaner and reassemble with silicon brake lube. Replace the bleeder valves and you should be good to go. Lots of threads on this process, it really is simple - each caliper has just a few parts.

Good luck!

Maybe here?

djpateman 03-17-2008 01:12 PM

For what Eric does it is very good value. Those early calipers are a lot trickier than the 69 and later models. I do a lot of calipers myself, so I know what is involved.

where can you buy the replacement steel or stainless pistons for the steel SC & Carrera calipers?
Pelican sells the rebuild kits but not the pistons. Only piston they sell is the stomski for the alloy calipers...
Thanks, Bob

I don't know if this is of any interst but I have a pair of freshly rebuilt front SC calipers that I bought from Pelican Syncroid here but never installed. They have all new, fresh zinc plated hardware and I'll let them go for $200 plus shipping. I don't have a picture on my home pc but can take a picture if anyone is intersted.

thanks Dan for the offer... however, I am upgrading to the carrera calipers & rotors.
Take care!
Bob
