Gang,
Just had a new windsheild put in my "S" racecar. i noticed that I don't have the metal trim strip in the seal.. Does this hold the windsheild in? I think it does! Damn, my race is Saturday, I'm out of town untill Friday! |

The metal trim strip doesn't hold (or keep) the windshield in. It's just what its name says - "trim".

I know the aluminum (sp?) "trim" holds my windshield in for my '85.

it does help to spread the rubber to increase pressure on the glass. it does not hold the glass in though. lots of race cars use metal tabs to guard against pop outs.

Just like it was stated above. I was told that yes, it helps in keeping the winsheild in place. Not in the sense that your windsheild will pop out if you don't install it but, that it spreads the rubber and creates more of an airtight fitting. I did mine both ways. Without it, it leaked. With it, it didn't. That's one of the reasons why they don't make them with or without the groove.

Actually-

So from a general safety perspective, there is no advantage to having the trim strip in eh?

Wait, I thought the C2 and later windshield was slightly larger than the earlier one, because the C2 and later models came with smaller trim. I'd be surrised if it was safe to mix and match.

Got a C2 windshield sitting in my 85 930 waiting for C2 seal. C2 seal is more expensive and has holes for antenna wires. Windshield looks correct. Many years ago I hit a curb in Van Nuys with the right front tire of my 912. It was a hard hit, but there was no damage to the rim. However, the windshield catapulted itself a few feet in the air and dive bombed the right front fender resulting in a five inch crater! That was with the trim in! Fabricate those tabs!

I'm just very loathe to drill holes in the body of the p-car.... I'm not worried about the windsheild popping out when I hit something, I think that's what it should do.... (it's a race only car) however
I am worried about air-pressure inside the car at 140MPH pushing it out... I'm assuming it would be okay because of front air force.... What about hard cornering and stress across the roof...? |

if it's a racecar, the tabs will only enhance that look. better than a face full of 140MPH air.
