Chain / Cam Gasket Change
I have a major leak between my chain box and case. I plan on replace the gasket and plate o-ring. I have plenty of room to get in there without dropping the engine. I hope to be able to mark the chain, sprocket and gear so I do not have to retime the side.
So, my question is this. Should I leave the rockers installed when I do this or should I remove them? Here's my thoughts. 1) Leave the rockers in - may keep pressure on the cam so it doesn't turn. 2) Remove them all so ther eis no pressure to turn, but this would allow the cam to move easily if touched. What do you think? John

Hey how did you go with this?
I have a small leak on my drivers side one, I'm thinking I can probably just tension the nuts and it might go away.

For the past year my 911 leaked about 1 or 3 oil drops from the right side of the engine immediately after driving. I was certain it was the right side cam chain cover gasket, and sorta ignored it since it wasn't serious enough to fix. Then I began to note oil accumulation below the oil pressure sender and along the cam chain tensioner oil line. In particular, the inline rubber transition fitting was also wet at the two unions where the metal line is pressed onto the rubber hose. So I bought and replaced the complete line including a new oil pressure sender and mounting block. To my pleasant surprise replacing this oil line "fixed" the cam chain cover leak. My point is, make sure the oil is leaking from the cam chain covers before you go to work on it. It may be the cam chain tensioner oil line instead. The driver side line running behind the distributor is also a common source of oil leaks. I replaced it and the four oil return tubes last March. I now have that rare 911 that truly has no oil leaks anywhere.

I left them in. I marked with a green paint pen all kinds of spots on the chains and sprockets in case somehting moved. I was able to dissassemble, chgange the o-ring and gasket and reassemble without any issues. I lowered the engine a few inches to gain better access too.
