More HP in a SC 3.0

In Waynes book he states that a good swap is to remove the CIS and install carb's. to get good HP increases, but can you get the same HP gains if you use an aftermarket FI system.

Start with this thread and then search some more on "EFI" or "Megasquirt" to compare. You might see better throttle response, but not that great a HP increase, unless your CIS is out of tune. I would expect maybe 15 HP tops. To get big HP gains, you need to change pistons, cams and exhaust with the carbs and/or go to ITB EFI. How much do you want to spend?

I would like to build a 285-300 hp motor. I has SSI's and 2 in 2 out muffler and I want to go with 3.4 jugs and pistons. I can buy a 3.6 but it will only make 240-250 Hp and cost me 10K

To make that kind of hp from a 3.0 SC block (if at all - The most Henry @ supertec, has gotten out of the 'best' 3.0 block from the 76/77 Carrera or turbo, is around 300, with MFI and 2.8SS), you'll need mucho $(>>10k) From everyone's experience on this board, it's more cost effective to get there with a chipped 3.6. See lotsa posts on this.

Seriously? You're contemplating a 3.2 crank, rods, and 98mm P&C's ? You'll be well over $10K.

That said, race 3.0's make a lot more than 300hp regularly. I'm hoping for 275in my 10.5:1, 3.2 headed, DC62 cammed, headers and 46mm ITB motor. Even at 3.0 capacity though I'm sure it's going to cost me $10K ish, + the good bottom end condition core motor. I need 3.0 for competition rules.

Sell your 3.0 and buy a 3.6. Just IMO.

if he buys and goes the route of the 3.6, what does he need to do to it to get it to 300 hp?
Thx Bob

Lessee, wanta punch it up to 300hp...lotta work ,LOTTA bucks will have non-standard P-car when finished...............or you might go for 350hp..buy this, and you should have either a 912 or an SC to part out..Surely the pieces would bring $6K,
Seats, flip outs, Fuchs AND "The body of the car is striate no dents " and you saved all that sweat...all you have to do is install huge unbreakable hasps on the deck lid so noone can see your apostacy...(you might also consider a killer sound system to play recorded C3 audio.)

3.6 will get up around 280+ with the right exhaust and the right chip. Lose some weight on the SC and it will be handfull. Ask me how I know...%^B

Have you read Wayne's book "How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche Engines". You should get some really good ideas from it. Personally I would stay with the standard crankshaft and go to 98mm pistons and barrells for a short stroke 3.2.
Of course it depends on how you are going to use the car.

Good luck.

+1

I'm planning/saving to do this..it's been a PITA finding 98mm p/c though

I'm waiting for either Mahle to do another production run or JE as a last resort, I hear their newest p/c are much better than in the past...

Still though even with this set up, keeping the CIS and thus a milder cam, 300hp is possibly just out of reach...

I have no choice living in Ca and wanting to keep it on the street legally...

Turbo. Sell your SC, take the rebuild money and buy a 930. It's the cheapest way. RoW '78 up make 300 HP from the factory, and another 100 HP is just bolt-on, nothing trick or especially expensive. And you don't have to stop there.

I was in the same boat.
Wanted more from my SC but it didn't make sense to dump $20k+ into it to go as fast as I wanted. Sold it, bought a Turbo and never looked back......

Less than 300HP is for the CLEANERS. Muhahaha

Sold MY turbo and kept the 3.6 powered SC. Best thing I ever did. It had low miles, ran well....but the suspension mods were something that were needed and ALREADY done on my SC.

The SC was just as fast and more predictable.....the Turbo was write me a ticket red....probably the biggest decider.

This is one guys idea

1983 SC engine
Engine, machine, assembly and dyno work by Dick Elverud
3.2 liter (98mm X 70.3mm), 298 HP and 249 ft./ lbs. torque (crankshaft)
8,000 RPM red line, Vellios throttle bodies, Simple Digital Systems programmable fuel management system, 10.25:1 JE pistons, Web-Cam 120-104 grind, 3.2 Carrera (1988) heads, dual plugged, custom 964 dizzy converted to mechanical advance, ARP rod bolts, Carrera pressure fed chain tens, dual MSD 6-AL ignition boxes, 930 lower valve covers, Elverud custom aluminum flywheel, Sach aluminum clutch package, George Narbel 1 5/8” headers-ceramic coated, S-Car-Go Racing dual in dual out stainless steel muffler.

Horsepower = Money

tsuter...........IMHO you have it bass akwards. The fellas that don't have a pile of coin in there cars usually drive more than the high budget rides. At least from what "I" see. My car is "not" and every day driver by any strech of the mind.

Randy Jones
1971 911 "Iris" (home of the above discribed motor)
