Can't remove distributor, 74 911.
Motor is new to me. I'm attempting to remove the distributor, which will barely turn and doesn't want to come out. There is evidence of distributor gear wear...timing mark moves around more than it should at idle. Time to get out the hammer and chisel?

I'm assuming you've removed the hold-down (!). In my limited experience, they're a snug fit and can be a struggle, especially if they've been in there a while. Pull harder; I'd use a rubber-faced mallet before a hammer and chisel. Plan to get a new O-ring if you're going to re-install it.
Good luck! John |

And don't forget to set the engine to TDC on #1 cylinder before you remove the dizzy! (Don't ask...)

Its likely your Oring, they get sticky and swollen and make it hard to remove. Try soaking that for a time with PB Blaster or similar.
In the end, the most extreme measure you can do is as follows... Use your BFG and wrap some safety wire or cable around the head and the other end of the cable around the base of the distributor (remove the cap). Then use the momentum of the BFG as you swing it upwards and away to tug the distributor out. Its essentially a 'slide hammer' action. This method is fraught with danger, including having the dist gear fall off, hittingyour decklid with a hammer and other fun events. However, I've never had those bad things happen and I've never had a distributor win that battle.
