hibernation wakeup problems
 

I got my SC out of hibernation finally. (82 SC -- US import)

Before putting her to sleep, I have to admit that I didn't do anything special. I was hoping to put winter tires on and drive her once a week around the block to keep her happy. Sad to say, I got snowed in first and didn't really have the time to have her pulled out to get to her to the gas station to change her to snow tires.

I did start her a few times and the first time was after almost 5 weeks. Not enough umph at the time to turn over. Had to keep the jumper cables on to provide the extra power to get her to crank over. Had a horror of a time with cranking and then putting the pop-off back on several times after backfires.

Anyway, she runs like crap now.

I got:

major rpm drops (will stall -- even while moving) during downshifting. Normally happens with slow release of clutch.

sounds like engine based poping while running cold (up to the halfway point when I look at my gauge).

lugging in all gears at low rpm. Pain to take a corner in second gear.

3rd gear finally feels good at around 3k rpm or higher

basically, now have to shift at higher rpms to feel the same as before hibernation. I used to be able to drive her like a normal car and not have any of these problems.

Also, she's a bit noiser in regards to muffler (lolo, I should check for holes ;) ) before she sounded like a 9ner but now like a bug :rolleyes:

I do still have the same one shot no gas pedal start ... normally. But when I have to go for the second attempt, a few jabs at the pedal normally does the trick.



I have gone to the mattress and started digging in past threads but I'm shooting in the dark at the moment, since I'm not sure if this is a single issue or multiple problems rearing their heads at the same time.

Does anybody have any ideas, leads?

Well for starters it just could be bad gas. If it is the same gas that has been sitting in there all winter and you didn't add stabilizer to it then it could be causing problems.

Get some good gas in there, drive it for a bit, and see if the problems go away. I bet they do.

Actually, I was thinking the same thing at first.

I filled her up the next day, threw in some cleaner additive (lolo, 2 bottles for good measure).
I have been looking for seafoam (or similar) but only found stuff that goes into the tank :(

I also got new plugs today ... hard to find in town (life sucks) and ended up with iridiums ... $$$$ :(
I'm gonna put them in tomorrow and see if I have any loose hoses ...

I bet it will clear up after a few tanks of gas

Isn't everything expensive in Japan compared to the US?

i get the impression its comprable to southern california but without the crime. atleast Tokyo

I live in Sapporo the home to the 72' Winter olympics and great beer ;)

Actually, I find Sapporo cheaper than SoCal. Much, much much more safer!
Women can walk the streets late at night almost anywhere in Japan. Major problem for them are guys crusing to pick them up.

We do have our weirdos and wacko cults but beyond that you really don't think twice to see 2 little 8 year olds walking to and from school.

Keep checking for vacuum leak; a pop-off valve seals and closes automatically unless it blew out of the glue.
The first ansd most important thing for storage is a FULL tank with Stabil AND Injector cleaner and running the stuff through the system before shutting down.
Not doing it results in problems as described.

I've reseated the pop-off about 20 times now ... dang thing doesn't like to stay put at the moment.
Actually, I really need to seat it properly. The PO only cut the hole and didn't bother to do anything with the fins. Then that person used electrical tape for a seal.

It worked ok last year, but I'm wondering now ... if my inexperience with a P car lead me to that conclusion.

If the pop-off valve is not properly glued in, you will have a vacuum leak and the mixture cannot be set; very bad!
Overall, it sounds to me that your engine needs a lot more TLC and a serious tune-up.
Band-aid solutions and cheap fixes will only add up to problems and frustration.
