Talking completed project(pic)

I have completely finished my pan restoration. Now the car is, well, driveable. here is a picture from last weekend. It was a perfect NC spring weekend. Driving topless, nothing but the wind in the hair.

My best friend is a pilot and his uncle was flying the tow plane for the local Sailplane club. WE drove down and got to fly(soar). The runway made a nice backdrop. The car has been lowered and front bumper guards removed.

I really like the clean, sleek look now. Enjoy.

Looks very nice - well done.

I'm tempted to remove the bumper guards on my car, and I'm also tempted to go with an "S" front bumper. I think it looks nice - somewhat more aggressive.

The other side of the equation is that what I have is original. What do you do?

Dean,
I did not too too much to the car. It was in good condition when I bought it. The latest project has been the front suspension pan. I replaced it myself and inthe process restored the entire suspenion system. New bushings, cleaned painted arms, overhaul brake system, strip, seal, coat gas tank, etc. It took about 7 weeks and an extra week for setting alignment, ride height, etc. It was kinda fun but a lot of hard work. no wonder body shops want a lot of money to do the same pan replacement.

I've got to replace the pan on my car as well, and have been quoted $1,500. What kind of job is it for the do-it-yourselfer? I know folks who are excellent welders, so is it something the weekend mechanic should try, or is it not for the faint hearted?

I'm really happy for you Jamie. You've certainly got a great looking result there. I've been keeping and eye on that black Targa of yours since you bought it- and thought it was sweet even then. Nice and original, low miles.
Have you considered the S spoiler like Allan is? The standard front is tidy, but I personally think the early spoiler completes the look well. Just keep the rear clean and don't let the Pelican Hot Rodders convince you to wack a mid eighties Carrera tail on 'for looks'.
Good lowering job by the way. I'm doing exactly what you are at the moment (bar the pan replacement). What Torsion/sway/bushes/shock settings did you go for and how do they feel?

Michael - If you can or know someone who can the pan replacment is a DIY kind of project. It is not DIY if you have no other transportation. It took almost two months working nights for a few hours. I ran into time commitments along the way. It could be done in three weeks if you have lots of free time, which I did not. I was aware that the $1500 bid is kinda average for this work. You have to completely dissassemble the front of the car, suspension, brakes, bumper, electronics, gas tank, etc... This is where most of the time is. I had access to a plasma cutter so removal was not an issue. I had a little extra rust and had to fabricate some corner pieces. Custom work always takes time.

Matt- I like the clean look. I will probably forgo the S spoiler. At this point I don't think I need it. If I start with the DE then I might. No tail, I don't think they look right on an early targa. I have stock suspension. 18/13 torsion bars, 16mm factory swaybars front and rear. I did have to upgrade to poly bushings. I wanted the same front and rear and Neatrix are not available for the front. The ride is a little harsh and I have some bushing groan on the driverside A-arm. This should wear in or I will take them out and turn on a lathe.

Thanks for all the compliments. My dad and I are about to build a 72 coupe. IT will have a 3.0 and should be fun. Stay tuned...

jamie
