Can someone advise me whether I could purchase a fan to mount on my existing oil cooler on my 83 SC(as shown below)?

I sent the same picture to Pelican Parts asking for their help but I havent recieved an email back. Thanks.

I understandfrom reading Bruce Anderson's Handbook, a fan would have minimal effect on the "jail bar" type oil cooler.

I understand the radiator type with fan is the way to go. Are you seeing excessive temps?

I have an '85 (US) with radiator type - no fan. I am trying to add the SPAL 7.5" fan. I found out, using trial and error, this fan really is too big to mount in the fender well. I need shave out about 1/8" off the fan and fabricate mounting points.

it was quite warm today and sitting in traffic, the needle rose to a little bit higher than the half-way point on the gauge.

It was, in fact, between the second and third marker, levels I have never seen since last summer...most of the winter, the needle never got past the second marker.

as a daily driver, I want to prolong the life of the engine as much as possible, esp. driving in the summer with the A/C on.

Although the tube-type radiator is not as efficient as the tube and fin cooler, adding a fan should help as this area gets very little airflow, especially in stop and go driving.

Use the smallest Spal pusher fan they have. I think it's 5.5" or 6". You'll probably have to relocate the horn, fabricate a fan mount (zip ties work) and wire it into a manual or thermostatic switch. If this is still not sufficient, start looking around for the recommended cooler. The fan is still needed, even with this type.

Question

Does anyone have any suggestions and pics of mounting a fan on the cooler. Have seen what the factory did on later models and is this the best version? Where is a good place to buy the fan? nhromyak@yahoo.com where did you get your stuff and hows it going?

TIA,

JA

The 28 row cooler is more of a heat sink than a radiator. ANY air you could get to it would help. My car has a C2T type bumper with air inlets replacing the factory style fog lights. The right inlet is aimed directly at the cooler. Never gets to the 1/2 point on the gauge.
This will not help you if you sit in traffic a lot though. Make a shroud for the cooler and mount a pusher. If you can't get air to the unit the pusher will draw it in.

I can’t seem to find where I got my 7.5” pusher from. I got the information from someone on this board. I recall only paying $43.00 for it though. I keep seeing them in the links below for around $75 +!

I have purchased the Bosch Round Relay socket and round relay from Pelican (~$34.00). I did this round relay for my 80W driving lights too. This makes it look VERY factory. I will be using some 16 gauge wire to connect to the fan. For now, I will simply use a negative wire to energize the relay. Some day I will make it automatically turn on at 190 degrees F. I understand either a 944 or a 928s thermal switch is easy and cheap. I hear the 911s switch does not turn on until 220 degrees.

I have the horns out. Since I got the 7.5” I still need to fuss with it. Then I want something better than ZIP-tie mountings. So I will fuss with that too.

Oh-well this is all part of the “FUN” of Porsche ownership, RIGHT?

for more air try the air scoop on this website . the stock oil cooler was designed to get its air from a flow produced by the rotating tire causing a negitive pressure behind the cooler resulting in air flow from positive pressure to negitive . but with this system the cooler recieves its air supply from just a few inches off the asphalt , a very hot supply , up to 20 degrees hotter than the air just 15 inches off the pavementMy .02 cts. jerry
