Rear shift coupler

Is there a trick to removing the center pin from the rear shift coupler to replace the bushings? Other than a heavy duty press?

You can tap it out with a hammer being careful not to break one of the ears. I used a hammer and a blunt punch, supporting the coupler and only allowing enought room below to clear the pin. I laid mine on top of a vice. It actually takes more than a tap, but it might help if you spray in some PB blaster to help break away any bonding that may have occurred from dry metal on metal.

If it won't budge take it to your local machine shop and have them press it out and reinstall it for you. Some guys have had luck tapping them out with a hammer or using a vise to press it out.

I used a hammer and drift to tap out the pin, and an appropriately sized deep socket on the other side to support the bushing without resting on the coupler. It took 2 people, and was kind of a pain, but it worked out fine.

I used a torch. A little messy, but no chance of breakage.

No heavy duty press!
Soak it in some penetrating oil.
I didn't like the hammer-method; I use my vise with various items like a socket in the back and a short drift in the front to squeeze the pin out.
The key is to prevent the ears from breaking while you force the pin out.

I used a heavy duty press and was very uncomfortable with the amount of force needed. It finally came out and too much force to put back. For some reason it didn't break. Maybe the soaking or spraying will help.
