Replacing motronic with megasquirt.

Ok, tell me why this is stupid...or not. If I were to replace the motronics with a megasquirt ECU I could eliminate the AFM completely. It also would be a path to a 946 plastic intake [better flow so I here] and eventually ITB's. I would think that the unit programed by Tbitz [for the 3.0 sc] would be a reasonable starting point. It should be inexpensive and fairly flexible. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Try a search on Tbitz or megasquirt, I think you have answered your own question. MS is great if you like to tinker. It is a combination of art and science. It will require some new sensors and work to get it right, hot and cold weather requires even more tuning.

I want to eventually go there but will wait for a rebuild and engine enhancement.

What year car? What motor? What are you using the car for? Track, daily driver, weekend warrior , etc.

I like mine but I'm not sure it's for everyone. Be ready to spend many hours reading and tinkering.

Let's be really clear. Megasquirt has all the abilities and then some of the existing Motronic in a Carrera. The fact that "tinkering" is made so easy invites one to do just that. Ask me how I know. But once done right, tuned right and left alone it will be a very reliable system.

I think you need to answer one question honestly to yourself: What do you expect over your existing system? Or in other words what is your motivation to consider this project in the first place? If it is a challenge and/or learning project then go for it hands down. If it is for performance improvement be prepared for a lot of learning and throwbacks before it'll pay off. There are cheaper, easier solutions proven solutions (think new map/chip).

One very specific comment: The new code base 2.883j for MS-II seems to be a landmark breakthrough in terms of what can be achieved with Megasquirt. The higher sampling and new acceleration enrichment make a world of a difference. It transformed the turbocharged T4 engine in the 550 replica I've been working on.

Cheers,
Ingo

Glad to see that the new code worked out for you guys. Pretty cool watching your engine parameters live as you tune and datalog but I agree research and know exactly what you are getting in to. Personally I think its a lot of fun but maybe not necessary if you are going from motronic in a non turbo application.
