Has anyone with carbs used techron? I am curious as to what it might do to some of the internal seals and what not of the carbs. Last thing I need is to have to rebuild the damn things, although that seems to be more and more the case. The car is a '74 911 with solex cams and euro pistons. I just can't get the thing to run completely right. It misses on one cylinder and runs kinda crappy when below 3500 or 4000...which I am guessing is running off the primary jets.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what jets etc. to put in the webbers. I believe they are 40 ida's. Main question is about the techron, though. Thanks, Paul |

sounds like dirty idle jets. pull them out and blow thru them and then hold them up to the light and see if you can see a clear hole. they need to be at least .55mm to give decent low end response. you also have to run hotter plugs to keep from fouling. bosch platinum in the 8-9 range, or whatever brand relates. techron should not affect the carbs.

Thanks, John.
I have cleaned the idle jets before and it seemed to help, but then the car quit working due to the ignition wires being so brittle. The idle circuit runs up to 3500, correct? Thanks for the suggestions, and hopefully the car will be running well. The engine, when I had it running top notch, is incredibly strong. Paul |

as the RPMs get up, the main jet starts flowing, along with the idle jet, and around 2500 the idle jet fades out. so it seems you have a low end stumble for some reason. an intake air leak, fouled plug, low compression, high leakdown, poor spark, clogged idle jet(s), tight valve, lots of possibilities.

I agree. Check your rotor cap for tracks. Do a compression test. Do you have an exhaust gas analyzer?

Unless a ring has broken, the compression should be on par with new or near new specs. The engine only has around 12,000 miles on a complete rebuild. The rotor, cap, and wires are fairly new. Timing and valves need to be adjusted, but the carbs are probably the ones at fault here. I have had problems on and off with them. Just put in a new float on one side because it had a hole in it and was flooding the engine like crazy. Engine was not really run with this condition because it wouldn't start and we noticed gas was pouring out of one side and puddling on the ground.
By the end of the week, I should know exactly what the problem is...haven't had all that much time to play with it. Thanks for the suggestions, though. Paul |
