Unhappy Oil Leaks

Hello...I am new member of this list and I am hoping you folks can help me. I just bought a 1980 911SC with numerous oil leaks. Does anyone know of a definitive list of the places 911's leak oil? A checklist, perhaps? So I can know where to look.

Thanks,

anywhere there's a gasket or an o ring seal is a potential leak. you have to clean your engine off at the $1 carwash, or with brakeclean spray, and evaluate your own particular leaks. once it's clean and dry, it's easy to find them.

Janus: Do yourself a favor and use the Search function to research this at this site. Not a brushoff, but you bring alot to the table if you do a bit of homework and then ask specific questions. Use "oil leak", "oil return tube", "O ring" to get to some specific topics on this stuff.

Now, your car will probably show some oil at the four oil drain tubes that go from the cam towers to the sump. Also maybe some from the sump plate itself. Maybe some from the front area, around the oil cooler and above this to the driver-side where the oil sender/oil thermostat switch is. Just maybe; so many possiblities, so much fun!

Good luck!

Try not to lose your mind over this, Janus.
These cars are over 20 years old now, and the gaskets, seals, etc. are too, especially if the maintenance history of your car has been spotty (pun intended).

Buy the Bentley SC repair manual and read up about some of the potential leak spots, and then start to fix 'em, or find someone good who can. We can help you, if you have any questions. Good luck!

Thanks very much for the advice. I will be especially certain to get a Bentley Manual. I sense also that the answer to the question is "NO", there is no definitive checklist that one can use to diagnose 911 oil leaks. But I suspect such a thing would be a hot seller for some entrepreneur with a bit of automotive know-how.

Your first step would be to clean your engine. There are some good posts on ways to degrease and clean the engine.

I spent a lot of time under my car, and I think my leaks are from the following:

1. Transmission shift rod seal -- replaced seal.
2. Exhaust vavle covers -- maybe fixed with new green gaskets.
3. Oil return tubes -- 2 on drivers side. I'll wait and see how bad this is. But replacement return tubes can be installed without pulling the motor.

Cheqhue that your car do not have to much oil.
Your motor should go when you check it, and for mine, I have the motor oil between max and minimum,
When I bought the car, it was on max, and I had a small oil leak when I stopped the car,
