Attaching splitter

I am redoing my RUF front bumper after a minor mishap!! I want to add a rubber lip to the underside. I have the material but I am looking for suggestions on the best way to attach it. There is a small 3/8" lip at the bottom of the bumper. I could use pop rivits then re paint them black. Any other thoughts?
Thanks
Mike

Pop rivets will work, but they need backing and the rubber has to be captured by at least a "fender" washer. For a cleaner look, I'd make a continuous 3/8ths strip of aluminum and rivet to the face of the rubber every 6 inches or so. Use a regular pop rivet designed washer as backing so they don't pull out. And they will as the rubber gets tweaked w/o secure mounting.

Milt:
If I use a 1/8" pop rivit, what is the diameter of that "fender washer" compared to a regular pop rivit washer? I assume you are suggesting that the aluminum strip should go on the outside of the rubber. Rivit throught the aluminum with the fender washer, then the rubber, then the bumper and a secuting rivit washer on the back side? Hate to be so anal about this!!
Thanks
Mike

I think the fender washer and the AL strip are redundant. Anyway, a fender washer has a bigger overall diameter than a regular washer both having the same size hole, or bolt size. It doesn't matter that is has an exact fit under the pop rivet as long as the flange of the rivet covers the hole well. OTOH, a pop rivet backing washer is sold to fit whatever size pop rivet you are using. An exact fit is crucial to it working as a backing washer.

I'd drill the AL strip one number size larger than the rivet for ease of insertion and pulling tight and use the strip instead of fender washers. Either way will work; both at the same time might be unnecessary.
