Post 2001 CORVETTE vs. 1988 930 TURBO

My buddy just bought a 2001 c5 corvette convertible 6 spd. And he let me and let me take it out for a test drive today. Wow what a car, I thought I had something special (1988 930). The vett was so fast off the line and handled real well in the corners, I was impressed, I thought I would not like the car but boy was I wrong. I’m thinking about switch teams, help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob,
this is by no means a fair comparison. Your '88 Turbo is 13 years older! Go test drive a newer turbo or a '88 Vette and then think twice.

The new Vettes are good for track cars. Get one on a lease and then when the engine blows, it is still under warranty. I sincerely doubt the Vettes can withstand the punishment endured by 20 to 30 year old 911's. There will always be newer faster cars but in a few years their allure will fade. There is something about my 12 year old car that I never grow tired of. I guess if you don't feel the same, it my be time for a change.

A Corvette is like a girl with alot of makeup.OK for a quick run around the block, but not something you want permanently parked in your garage.

I reccommend you go test drive ANY of Porsche's 2001 models, and I will bet almost anything you won't switch teams.
On the other hand, I see many people comparing new Vettes with older Porsches, I guess that is the only way the two can compete.

Mrdi- cool quote!

Jeff- I have tried both (posted a related thread a few days ago)
I test drove (hard!) a 2001 911 turbo with 900 miles on the clock.
Last week i test drove a new vette but was limited to how much I could 'boot' it! as the salesman was next to me!.
But my personal feeling was that it was a 'hell of a car for the money!'.
I don't particularly like the older styling of the 80's 90's vettes but since 97 the new style has italian flares and is muchmore appealing.
The comfort and performance definately put it well into the supercar territory.
Just check out it's acceleration times and power to weight etc.
As for handling I was blown away by a mid 80's vette (automatic tranny!)in an auto x.
Porsche has the history the style and the engineering and of course the name!.
Those of you who beleive they do not care about the astigma positive or negative that runs with the name are just lying to yourselves!.
People are impressed by the name others hold contempt for the name!. How often are you cut up by trucks or SUV's followed by hard glareing looks? or is it just me?
AS for the vette, I too am tempted to sample this affordable option!
