I drove a friend's 87 Carrera 3.2 with a 993 motor in it yesterday. The conversion is very well done and WOW did it go fast
![]() ![]() ![]() Anyway the owner asked me to ask a question for him. He has 964 bumpers and side panels on it, but wants a 964 engine lid with electric spoiler as well. His mechanic told him that it couldn't be made to go up/down by it self as on the real 964s. It could only be made to go up/down by pressing a button in the cabin. So for now the car still has the original 3.2 engine lid without spoiler. What do you think? Can it really be correct? I mean if he buys a complete 964 engine lid with spoiler, electric motors, relays etc. it ought to be possible...? Or...? |

Well Jack Olsen is probably the best to answer this question and in no time I am sure he will reply.
The tails are made to go up at 75mph (correct me if I am wrong) so I am sure there is wiring to the speedo that makes this happen, and it is this wiring that is missing thus the button. and the wings go down at a stop, but stay up if you are traveling 25mph for at least 15min... I think Jack uses the button method...by the way did you ever do the one-touch switches? Also he has mentioned that the 3.6's need the tail to go up for extra cooling...so it may be essential for your friend to get the wing or improve cooling. Jack...? MJ |

Well there's a point there. Also I did actually notice how the oil temp gauge moved past "my" usual operating temp and stabalized just below the second white marker (my 3.2 stabalizes at the first of the white markers). However there was still plenty of space up to the red marking.

With regard to the temperature, he'll probably only have real problems when (or if) he goes to the track.
I've wondered about speed-sensitive switching as well, but I haven't done any research on it. If you don't upgrade to the G50 transaxle, then you're not working with the speedo sender that the system was designed for. In my case, I'm not working with an electronic speedometer at all. If the wing is controlled by the car's computer, then it might be possible. But the guys who figure out how to bridge the old wiring harness to the new engine usually aren't also considering fancy extras like electric spoilers. Tyson Schmidt has a 72 with a 964 decklid (switch controlled), and also a 964 with a 964 decklid. He also explained to me how to wire my switched decklid. If he reads this, maybe he can put some of his considerable brain power to work on it. Also, I did get the one-touch electronics kit for my decklid switch, but haven't installed it yet. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 05-08-2001).] |

You didnt mention which trans he is running. Its designed to work with the newer G50/50. The tail receives a signal by way of the ECM, which gets an electronic signal from the VSS. It took me thirty minutes to hook up a P/W switch and wire it so it works manually on my car.
