Post Pictures from Sundays race

Well it was a good shakedown weekend for the 911. We placed first overall on Saturday at Gingerman (includnig beating some big-bore boys and a Pantera...) and Sixth overall (3rd in class behind 2 RSR's) on Sunday. Here are some pics of the new RS(r?) from the weekend!

Chris

Awesome! The pictures are like a time warp, not too far from:

Aside from the hot brakes, what were your impressions of the suspension and the new powertrain?

Jack,

That's like a mirror image. Notice that the fiance' took shots while I was in front.. Good one!

Well I've got a laundry listIn no particular order.

1) Too much camber. Outside of tires were too cold (10-15 degrees lower) compared to inside and middle.

2) Overheating brakes

3) Left rear wheel bearing gave up on me. (Could be caused by camber settings.)

4) Tires were getting really greasy in last session) though that could have been that damn Camaro dropping gas on the track. Can't believe no one saw it!

5) Suspension felt really good... Stiff enough without really being nasty on the rough stuff, though I REALLY felt those curbs.

6) Seemed to be a good under/oversteer balance. In the carousel I could smoothly throttle steer to rotate the car into the apex, then apply the power to push the front end out to the track-out point with almost no steering input (LOVE PORSCHE's for this)

7) 915 3rd gear syncro is the same, tough to get into. One missed shift cost me a 1st place in the first race... Dropped to 3rd!
I had to dominate the Big-bores in the back field in order to make my passes stick when we hit the two main straights...

Hmmm...

8) Car was hard starting when hot. Didn't want to turn over...

9) Pedal box bushings need replacement asap.

10) Damn HOOD CAME UP to the stop in one session. Getting hood pins... Meatball flag in effect. Racers "go fast" tape took care of that.

Here's a few more... Notice on the close up that Pantera behind me. Great car. FAAST!

That's a beautiful car and some great pictures.

Question: Why did you attach your shoulder harness to the rear firewall with a grommet instead of wrapping around your roll bar? I think the rollbar is the preferred mounting point.

This sounds like what killed my starter. My mechanic says the heat can do it. I just put in one of the high-torque ones. Are you running any kind of cooler on the tranny? I'm in the process of adding one, and we might even point a small fan at the starter itself.

Orbmedia, I've heard that the factory seat mounts are the strongest points for the harnesses, although the roll bar is acceptable as well. Roll bars will bend and deform in an accident. Those rear mouning points are probably more secure.

Wrapping around the roll bar is a common method. mine were there when I bought the car... I hear both opinions about this, and frankly, it seems 50/50, so I leave them where they are untill I am convinced one is better than the other...

Jack, the starter seems to work fine when the car has cooled a bit. Do you think this will eventually cause it to fail?

That's exactly what happened with mine. I had it on the track back in December of last year, and about midway through the day the starter started making a funny noise, then grew progressively worse, until I had to push start it and take it home.

It was fine when I tried it the next morning, and worked for the next four months, two more track events included. Then, end of April it got weak after one session on the track, and was done by the second. Cooling down this time didn't help, and there was no one around when I had to push start it the next day. I learned that I live at the lowest point of a broad, gradual depression. I also learned that I'm not in spectacular shape, and that 2500 pounds is a lot to push. Five or six tries. Finally, I got it going.

What worries me even more than the cost of a rebuilt starter is what all that heat is doing to the transaxle. I plan on running a cylinder head gauge to it eventually, so that -- even with the cooler -- I can tell just how crazy things are getting down there.

Thumbs up

Your Car looks great. I'm not going back to the track again intil next month so those pictures are just killing me.

What group are you running with and what class does your car run in? I run with the POC, but it looks like a lotta fun to run with alot of different makes of cars. Both our cars seem to be setup basically the same so that might be kinda fun.

I'm running with VSCDA www.vscda.org .

It's a pre-73 group and in class 6C right now which is mostly for Big-bore cars. I should be in Group 8, but there's some debate on classification right now. It means the difference between being in the top 5 in 8C or top 30% in 6C, so you know which group I'm gunning for.

I'm thinking of new discs, titanium heat sheilds behind the pads, and wilwood calipers to help the brake overheating problem. Plus perhaps enlarginf the air scoops and making sure I have those block-offs in the wheels...

It would be cool to get the two cars together! Where are you located?

Unhappy

Well unfortunatly I live in California. So it would be pretty difficult. But, I'm gonna check out the VSCDA and see where else they run. I dont mind putting the car on a trailer and going on a road trip to a track

MMarsh... Unfortunately it's all in the MidWest... However the Brian Redman Internation Challenge and the Fall Vintage Festival, both at Road America, attract quite a few people and are similar to Monterey Historics...

One main safety item that caould get you is the requirement for a fuel cell... We'll have a good sized pit space though and you're welcome to share...
