Hard oil line clamp position under car
hello. i'm retrofitting an early car with hard oil lines that run beneath the vehicle. could someone give me the positions of the 3 clamps beneath the rocker panel. I know I could just wing it but am trying to be accurate.

On my sc it is as follows :
|------------------------|--------------------------|---------------------------| <-------14.5----------><--------18.5---------><----------15-----------> <-bottom of rocker 14.5 This is on a factory install SC line, it always surprised me that they were never even. Measure from the bottom left side of the rocker and go over 14.5 inches centered on bold, then from center of bold mark the next center of bolt at 18.5 inches at center then the next one is 15 inches at center. Hope this helps, Jon W. |

The positions are illustrated in the factory repair manual if you can get a copy.

I may be overanalyzing things greatly, but for a constant section pipe, having uneven spacing reduces the possibility of resonance. If the spacing was even, a 4th order bending resonance would be possible, as the 3 clamps would be at node points. The uneven spacing would require an odd looking mode shape that would have a much higher frequency (and therefore is less likely to get excited).
There is probably a much more simple reason for the spacing ...

- Not if it was designed by Germans.... That is a good point you make on the resonance... |

Wackit,
On the 74 and later cars, the spacing matches the screw positions for the rocker trim, where it fastens to the bottom of the rocker--beneath the car. The S trim for 73 and earlier cars does not wrap over the lower lip of the rocker like the later cars and does not have the three screw attachments but you could easily find someone to measure the spacing, or find an example yourself to measure. The later cars also have a raised bracket welded under the rocker that receives the screw, clamp, and rocker trim. Earlier cars do not (as I recall) so retrofits of hard lines are often use different types of clamps and screws for mounting.
