Took on my friend's '96 M3 with the 82SC

So coming back from the gym, my friend and I decided to finally see how these two cars stacked up to one another.

His car has powerflow, and a free-er flowing exhaust.

Mine is stock with the 1974 Exhaust back date.

I know these cars are better track cars, and drag racing is not a true test (I am a die hard F1 fan) but I just had to satisfy this itch to wipe the condesending smirk off his face about my good old 911

1st run: kicked his ass
he blamed it on traction control
lauch at 4K

2nd run: kicked his ass

3rd run: kicked his ass
he is still futzing with the launch RPM

4th run: ran even till midway through 3rd then he pulled away

5th run: got a bad launch and he won
3.5K

6th run: ran even till about midway in 3rd again
3K

7th run: tried a 2.5K launch, bogged it and lost
called it a day

So it looks like the 14 year old p-car can still hold its head up in a scummy street drag race...with a newer clutch, 8's or 9's in the back and the short shift...I think it would definately be p-car domination

can't wait to set up my car and do my first driver's ed event and then some track time...and then see the real test of which german machine is the true champion...

thought this Porsche over BMW victory might help sooth the lack of a factory effort in the racing world...and those cheating 2001 M3's with the V-8's in the Le Mans series...Bavarian bastards

Yah well I used to be one of those M3 driving bavarian bastards (not the racing ones mind you) I had a 97 M3 and I'm surprised he lost to the SC, I guess those cars really respond to good exhaust. The one I had seemed a bit faster than the 73 911S I have now, but then again the low end torque of that car might just make it feel faster than a top-endy 911. If I had a choice of two cars on a decent budget, I'd have BOTH my 911 and my old M3, BMW makes fantastic cars! (even though the newer M's are a bit overkill in the styling dept IMHO). In the end, if you have two cars that are relatively close in power/weight, it always comes down to the driver...

I think if you and your friend switched cars, the results would be different.

I am a little surprised that your friend's M3 didn't beat you too. An M3 like your friend has puts out about 240 hp. What kind of horsepower does your SC have? Stock they had about 180 hp right? How many miles do each of the cars have on them? That's a great kill for you, but I would like to find out some more info as to why the M3 got beat. Must be in the gearing and traction...porsches rule!

Yeah I was surprised too. I was thinking I would al least not get spanked and just get the respect that this 14 year old car can hold its own.

I think he is pulling 250hp at the flywheel and about 220 at the rear wheels

my car is probably 210 at the flywheel and 180 at the rears with the exhaust

but weight to power ratio is probably slightly in his corner

and with equal drivers I think his car would be hitting 60 about 0.5 to 1.0 car lengths in front of me...if we were dragging till 120mph I think he would end up being 1.5 car lengths ahead.

it was just some tire burning fun we had...now I got to get him to come out to the track and see how they stack up there although the M3 is one of the best handling cars out there...and I love driving his.

no weird pedals...crisp (no brainer) down shifts...but I still love my car!

actually the 911SC looks more like a frog...with the bug eyes...I like it...the beamers look good...but they are not head turners like our cars...they are a dime a dozen and hardly different from the regular 3 series...

82 sc,
He did pussy foot his M3 to not beat you.
I have a stock 325i (92) that smoked my friends 78 sc.......189 hp
Now I will not take the car to the breaking point in corners like I'm doing with my 911, but it's engineering is impeccable(sp?)
The engines last forever-even under sport driven conditions-It's not rare to see over 300,00 on them(as rare as-only heard about in books-SC engines)and still have some ass to get up and go in old age. They make GREAT brakes--my 3 series car just about makes my eyes pop out when I get down on the anti locks.
You really need to own one before you knock on it................

hahaha

when did I knock it?
I think they are great cars...

but there is no way your 325 smoked a 911...maybe beat it...but not by a huge margin...unless the 911 is not mechanically sound or YOUR friend pussyfooted the car...

hahaha

Thumbs down

I'm sorry... It was your friend in his SC that was doing all the pussy footing if you beat him with a stock 92 BMW 325.. I would give all three of my cars, my house, my wife and my dog to the first stock 325 owner that beat me in a race...

I must be missing something and I'm sure this
august group will square me away but how does
an 82SC get to call itself a fourteen year old? Oh it's a FEMALE 82--that explains it!!

Hmmm, sorry to say, but I vote for the M3 driver either 'pussy footing' it, or just being lame...

That car accelerates 0-60 about 1 full second quicker (low to mid 5's, i.e. 993 territory) than an SC, from what I recall.

And if he didn't turn off the traction control, it sure would hose up a quick launch. It cuts the power, very abruptly and effectively.

hey jorge I meant that my car is 14 years older then his...thanks for noticing my error...hahaha...

but really...the 325...there is no way that beat an SC...hahahaha
You are talking about a 3.0L Sports Car vs a 2.5L in line 6 wanna be sports car
and who the hell has 300K miles on a 10 year old car?????? that is 30K a year...almost 2800 a month!!!! are you joking???
I guess YOUR friend in his SC was being lame...or pussy footing it...

The M3 I will not argure that it is surprising I won...sure maybe his launches (with and without traction control) were not the best and his shifting was not the best...but my friend is definately no slouch when it comes to driving...but those are the results...

Now an M3 is definately not in the low fives...it is high fives and low sixes...lowest I have seen is 5.5 but that is rare..

The SC should do it stock in the mid to high 6's and with the exhaust I am sure that improves..I know that it is BS, but Road and Track back in 82 quoted 6 flat for the american SC and the euro magazines quoted their SC's at 5.8

realistically I think low 6's for the euros and the SC's with the back dated exhaust

But anyways...I am not trying to start a mud slinging war...jsut thought my triumph over a more modern and refined car was a something we could all laugh about...

but anyways...by the way I just posted pics of my car on the gallery...and I ran across yours Campbell...I can't tell you how beautiful the shot over mulholland is...WOW...and the color of your car is great...what is the history of your car? All the guys at work were ooo ing and aww ing at the pic...definately a 1st class looking car...

You're right, I think the 'official' factory claim was 5.6 secs; 'low fives' is a bit optimistic. The M Coupe (same engine but lighter car) does get into the low fives though. Either way, the 3.2 M3 pulls hard enough up to about 80 for any stock-ish pre-993 911 to struggle trying to keep up. Sorry, but I've owned and driven both breeds and that's my gut feel.
