International Shipping Vendors - full container sized
Guys,
I have a friend moving back to India from the United States. He is wanting to hire a container to move his personal belongings and possibly a 911. Can anyone recommend a shipping vendor that is economical and that sells containers and 1/2 containers? Thank you, Doug

Doug,
Most ‘rent’ a shipping container. Any shipper worldwide can get a container in minutes. It is almost the ultimate commodity. I have a friend in the UK who now owns several SWB in various states. Additionally there are a lot of parts purchased here. He bought a ‘High Cube’ 40’ like-new, used once container. I’m having installed vertical E-track so ‘shoring beams’ can support a second level of Porsches. He intends to keep the container for storage in Sussex. Packing the container is critical. Most come with welded-in ties every 4’ along the bottom sides. You can also rent a data logger that tracks the shocks and more during transit. Insurance is absolutely necessary. Normally it is best to have a pro load and secure everything. For international shipments you will need the container ‘certified’. I suspect there are strict requirements for inspection prior to shipment to the US. Best, Grady

Grady,
Thank you for the information. I should have been clearer. Can you recommend quality shipping vendors who offer shipment of an overseas container, including container rental (and maybe even reasonable prices? Thank you, Doug

Doug,
Your friend will need to find a shipper in India. That shouldn't be dificult. The shipper will know all the regulations and lead him through it. This is 'everyday' stuff and shouldn't be a problem. Shipping a 911 should have copies of it's title and other documents taped to it. Put the VIN on the windows with shoe paint. Best, Grady

The biggest pain right now is the wait the docks are full of cars and containers in transit. I sold a car 3 months ago and they finally are picking it up this week

There are are number of logistics companies that can help with something like this, plenty in Southern CA for sure.
If you want to try a larger company, give Expeditor's west coast office a call and they can give a quote and advise on duties, fees, transit time, shipping costs, etc. They can handle any container size, 20', 40', 40'HQ, 45' etc. Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. 5200 W. Century Blvd. 6th Floor Los Angeles CA 90045 USA Phone: 310-343-6200 Fax: 310-649-1995 or Laufer: They have an office in Long Beach but I don't have that number - Corporate Office 20 Vesey St., Suite 601, New York, NY 10007-2913 phone: 212-945-6000 fax: 212-945-3324 The biggest obstacle might be getting the container dropped in a driveway to load. |

You didn't mention the city where your friend is moving from. I do know places that sell used certified containers. The 27-28' "pups" were about $1400.00 and the 40' were about $2900.00 the last time I had checked on them. Even the 27-28', non-certified ones make great Hurricane storage areas for 911's, plenty of room to get around inside. I have seen trees fall on them, and there was hardly even a dent from it. Most are very strong. Good luck!! Tony.

Thanks guys - he is returning from the San Francisco Bay Area to Bangalore, India. I don't think he'll have an ongoing need for a container, just access to one for the overseas trip. Though, who knows, maybe he'll want to drywall it, wire it, plumb it and setup shop

For the same price as purchasing a container you can get a 40ft loaded and shipped from india to San Diego for around 3800$. We just shipped product from Shanghai to India for a little less, the 3800$ came from a return container. There are a bunch of transport companies in India too so it shouldnt be too difficult to find. 2800-4500 should be the price-range. Right now is a good time to ship lots of open boats at the moment.
GF Consolidators LTD. Did the shipment, - we've used them a couple times and have been really nice to work with, They also have some fast boat shipping options as well. 30-45 days on the water and they will drop the container off and give you a day or 2 to load it then comeback and pick it up. Just make sure when the container is dropped you inspect it for leaks and tears in the top. Good Luck. JW |

Thanks very much, guys!
Anyone else have direct experience with shipping companies that my friend may explore? He is moving from the SF Bay Area (West Coast) to India, Bangalore. He does not want to purchase a container and will just rent one. Managing logistics of drop off and pickup will be appreciated, because personal belongings, furniture and his car will be loaded into the container. So it will have to be appropriately suited. Thank you, Doug
