Hi
The only remaining external project I’ve got left on my 915 transmission (44,000 miles, have done Swepco, Wevo shifter, bushings, shift coupler, motor and trans mounts) is to check to be sure the fork is securely tightened to the inspection plate. Before I get started, are there any indicators that the fork might be loose and this is necessary? I’ve got a new gasket and new Swepco – is there anything to watch out for when removing and reinstalling the inspection plate? Should the transmission be in neutral or any particular gear before opening it up? Anything to align when re-installing? Can it be done safely on rear jack stands without being on a lift? Last one. The new gasket is a thin paper; does it get any sort of sealer when re-installing? Thanks Paul

This isn't a big job BUT really isn't necessary unless you think there is a reason it would be loose.
If you remove the plate, you will lose most of your nice new Swepco so , IMO, unless you absolutely need to out of curiousity, don't. With only 44,000 miles, it should be in great shape.

Thanks Wayne
Frequently, it seems to take too much force to come out of 3rd and 4th – I’m trying to check off the easy possibilities before considering the bigger possibilities. Paul

I see. Is the new coupler adjusted properly or were the parts you installed an effort to stop this symptom?
Either way, it won't hurt anything to check the forks but you will need to replace the Swepco or catch it in a drain pan and reuse if it's not too old. The paper gasket is intended to be used sans sealer but I used a little tacky adhesive around the perimeter for good measure. Just go light on it. Yes, the gasket will not come off in one piece if you take the cover but oh well.

The sticking in 3rd and 4th seemed to get worse after the new transmission and motor mounts (the originals had about one inch of play) and switching to Swepco from what I think was the factory fill. These were done at the same time. The Wevo shifter and PSJ did make a very large improvement in precision and feel, but didn’t help the feel that it sometimes takes too much force to shift out of 3rd and 4th. Going into gear, not bad at all, out of 3rd and 4th takes more effort than the other gears.
