Post smoke at startup

My 98 Carrera S once in a while will blow smoke out the exhaust at the initial startup in the morning. The car runs smoothly at regular temperature. My dealer shrugs his shoulder and says this is normal. What do you guys think?

Did you say 1998 Carrera 2? My 81 does it, as well as most older (64 - 89) 911s I see, but I have yet to see a water cooled Porsche do this. I would be concerned if the car is out of warranty soon.

98 is air-cooled (993). If your oil is a bit overfull or the car has been sitting a while it's perfectly normal. If it only does it occasionally, don't worry about it.

We're dealing with different cars and engines. The 3.2 in the car I drive smokes on start up now and then. Very rarely. My wrench tells me that the valves can stop in a position that allows oil to enter the cylinders on shutdown. The car has done this twice over the last 3K miles.

Mine does this occasionally. Last night's belch must have cleared every mosquitoe in my neighborhood. Most of the time it doesn't smoke at all, but every once in a while it really lets go. Just keep saying to yourself....it's normal, it's normal...yeah, that's it...normal.

As long as your oil consumption is OK then this is fine.

It is a characteristic of the boxer engine.
They all do it to some degree, even the BMW motorcycles.

nature of the beast. parking at any angle aggrevates the condition, allowing oil to puddle behind the piston, and seep past the rings. it doesn't take a lot of oil to make a lot of smoke.
