Question any other discounters like Harborfreight?

Do you know of any other good discount tool catalog order type places out there?

Northern Tool and Equipment. But "good"? Harborfreight and Northern both sell mostly Chinese junk. You'll spend more money on replaced tools, ruined parts and wasted time after you buy cheap tools than you ever will if you buy the good stuff first. That doesn't mean you have to buy Snap-On or Facom; Craftsman's perfectly good for weekend use, and the guarantee is great. The only thing I know of that they won't replace no-questions-asked if you break it is a half-inch-to-three-eighths adapter after you've snapped it off with a breaker bar.

After breaking my 1 5/16 Craftsman wrench with a overhead crane they replaced it, no questions asked. You should have seen the look on his face. Definately a good weekend tool with the best warrantee in the business. Still not a Snap-on though.

FACOM RATCHET WRENCHES ARE GREAT, EVEN THOUGH VERY EXPENSIVE. BUT THE TIGHT FIT IN PORSCHE MAKE THIS TYPE OF VERY SHORT THROW RATCHET WELL WORTH THE EFFORT. BE VERY SELECTIVE WITH HARBOR'S TOOLS AS ALL ARE VERY INEXPENSIVE CHINESE IMPORTS. TAIWANESE TOOLS SEEEM MUCH BETTER AND COSTCO USUALLY CARRIES METWRENCH,A MECHANICALLY BETTER WAY TO HAVE SOCKETS ENGAGE THE NUT OR BOLT. SAM'S CLUB CARRIES "CRESCENT" TOOL SET WITH SIMILAR ENGAGEMENT METHOD FOR ABOUT $60.. BUT THE FACOM RATCHET MAKES IT ALL WORK MUCH BETTER.

Try Enco at www.use-enco.com. They have a combination of cheap to very expensive brands, and will send you a huge catalog.

I think it's ok to buy some cheap chinese tools for things you will hardly ever use, just to save a trip when you need them - if you use them hard and they break, just toss 'em. For example I bought a gear puller for about $8.00 at a traveling cheap tool sale and have used it twice because it happened to fit better than my good puller. Bought some consumable things like drill bits, grinder disks, etc, and they seem to last almost as long as good ones for a fraction of the price. Bottom line is, you get what you pay for, but for some tools you won't use but once a year or so, it might be better to buy the cheap one than not buying anything.
