915 diagnosis. Can you help explain?
My Porsche Technician has removed the motor and trans from my 911. The box is stripped down (almost totally) and he's told me the facts.
The "3 point drive" is broken. I don't know what this is! Is it something to do with the input shaft? Anyhow, the 1st gear part is busted, providing no drive to that gear. The 1st gear dog-teeth are gone too. It needs 1st & 2nd synchros and "brake shoes" energizers etc. I don't know if I heard him correctly over the phone. (I'm a total gearbox newbie ).Apparently, it was a good thing, not driving the car around in 2nd after the box blew. The diff was all full of bits of gear, but miraculously, the gears (all of them too, not just the pinion and crown wheel) are spotless for their age! Looks like it should be a routine job. He's telling me it's not going to be too costly, but he'll have a final figure late tomorrow for me. Can anyone help explain this "3 point drive"? I can't find any info on it. Hi,
Your ordeal is exactly what I just went through 3 weeks ago with my 1975 915 trans. The 3 pointed deal is called a sycro hub it looks like a triangle and the gear sliders goes around the syncro hub and moves on it between 1st and second gear. what happens ( to me anyways) is the 3 ends of the sycro hub broke off , not letting the slider move freely between the 2 gears. In 1977 and on porsche made the ends of the sycro hub much larger , I guess a lot of the older trans broke them ! so to repair the trans you will need .. sycro hub $260 1st gear slider $200 1st gear dogs teeth $130 syncros for 1st and second gear $65 gaskets and oil I have a nice 1979 915 trans that I am selling for $800 , if it ends up costing you too much to fix yours .. Take care Joe |

Joe,
I appreciate the offer! I live in Australia, though and it's a little costly with our "half-dollar"! Good time for you U.S. Guys to take a vacation over here. You get roughly $2 for every one of yours. This looks like it's pretty cut and dried. I don't mind the box I've got. He tells me it's in good condition, so I'll stick with it. Cheapest way out, as I'm about to buy house. Need all the cash I can get! Adam ------------------ Adam Chaplin - 1976 911S Coupe |

Adam,
Take a look at parts #12 and #41 in the following diagram, and you may have a better idea what has gone wrong inside your 915: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1978-83/3-3-3.JPG The 'guide sleeve' is what the 3-point drive is called in the parts catalog. It is what the 'slider' or operating sleeve (parts #13 and #42) slides back and forth on when actually shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and 3rd to 4th gear. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
