993 Mirror Help - Before I break something!
 

I have a 993 windshield in my car with a mounting point attached. I purchased a 993 mirror that arrived with what appears to be the same mounting point in place.

Is this a correct assumption? If so how do I remove the mounting point from the mirror? I have already tried to rotate it by placing two posts in the holes shown and turning. I was hesitant to put to much presure on it for fear of breaking it.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1207503932.jpg

This part has two numbers on it. One is 01 10093 and the second which is next to an Audi logo 02 10093.

Did the maunufacturer make the same part for a Porsche 993 and an Audi?

Any guesses on how to remove the back plate?

Hi Ryce- I have the 993 factory books but not where I am now... Have you tried posting this in the 993 forum?

I didn't think about the 993 forum. I'll post this there also.

Having a "break-away" interior mirror is a safety requirement so this insert must somehow be held in with a snap or spring loaded mechanism that mates with the recesses in the nut. So the disk will probably snap out if you can get a grip on it.

Could you thread a suitable screw part way into one (or both) of the holes, stick them in a vice and then pull the mirror off?

I looked in the 993 factory service books and it doesn't explain how to remove the button from the mirror.:( They show the whole mirror just being glued into position as a unit. They list a typical 2 part mirror adhesive.

2nd targa might be right about an internal snap ring holding the base to the mirror.

Personally I'd just start cautiously applying more force and see if it pops out.

Your picture of the one already on the glass looks like maybe it has a few tabs sticking out a little at the 12, 5, & 7 o'clock positions?

It's interesting that the service books don't show any detail...

Did the glass guy say anything about the mirror? Maybe call them back out and see if they know any tricks?

What ever you do...DON'T try to remove the already glued button from the glass...the windshield will crack or chip...I tried saving a 911 windshield but needed the button...the windshield ended up in the dumpster.

I'm going to try to remove it more vigorously this weekend.

I bought this from a fellow Peican. I emailed him and asked a few questions but no answer, maybe he is on vacation.

Maybe this really isn't a 993 mirror after all.

I drilled the holes bigger and put in a a bolt and was able to pop off the backer plate. The correct 993 mounting point was inside.

Never been burned by a Pelican yet!

Nice! Glad it worked out. How was it held in? Snap ring? or plastic tabs? A picture would be great for the record.

If you look at the mounting point on the windshield it has a slight T-shape to it. The mirror has a metal clip inside that mimicks that shape. I seems that you put the mirror over the mounting point and then rotate it 90 degrees to engage it.
