Advice needed: DIY gone bad

Guys, I need your advice so I know what I'm in for:
I just purchased a performance muffler from another Pelicanite; I soaked the bolts on the studs from the turbo to the cat as I'll be removing the stock cat and muffler as one piece. After soaking for a couple of days in PB Blaster, all the bolts broke free no problem with just an open ended wrench. As I was loosening the upper rear bolt (not even a full turn yet) it started to tighten up......yup, I think the stud sheared off. I marked the end of the stud to be certain and it moves back and forth with the bolt. I don't want to go any further until I know how complicated this is going to get if I have to replace a stud and/or remove the turbo. Any suggestions?

I suggest posting this in the 930 forum.

But, FWIW, a broken stud is not the end of the world. Some heat and a stud puller will help you to remove what's left of the stud so you can install a new one. If you can't get the stud out, then it can be drilled out (very carefully), but this will require the turbo to be removed from the car.

I am not an expert but that happened to me also. In my case I was taking the turbo off anyway. I then took the hot housing off the turbo and took it to a machine shop and they extracted the stud.

If you are luckey, after you get the cat & fuller out there will still be some shaft left to try to get a grip on. Otherwise I think you may be able to drill it and use a stud extractor. With all the heat that think went trough may or may not work also.

If not, take the turbo off and do as I did.

If you do remove the turbo make sure it get primed with oil before you runn it up.

Good luck.

Can you see enough thread to start a nut on it? You may be able to plug weld the nut to the stud. May not be feasible in position...

While off topic, I feel the need to chime in...
I for one, believe your question to be of technical nature, regardless to the type of the car you drive. Just because its a turbo does not mean the question by nature is "turbo" specific. Not only is your question posted in the correct forum, you'll quickly receive many more responses.

Thanks everyone. I used your input and I was lucky enough to have a successful go of it . The details are over in the 930 forum in case anyone's interested. Not only did I use information on this board to help me choose the right car, but I can find (or ask in this case) tons of valuable info to help me fix and mod the car. This is a great community. I hope this thread helps somebody else in the future.
