I was under my car today and i noticed a little sticker with Porsche script and a part #. The sticker is on the left side engine case, the lower part where the two halves meet. It can only be seen from the right side, on the low protruding tab. I was wondering if this is original or if my case was replaced, hence, the sticker.

Mike,
Check the 'Type Number' location adjacent to the right side of the fan housing. If the number is missing, or obviously hand stamped, then yours is, indeed, a replacement case! The factory stamping is done with a special stamp -- all numbers at once, perfectly aligned. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Thanks for the reply Warren, I checked my stamping and it is there and perfect, with the little stars before and after the number. I will take a pic of the little sticker as soon as I can.

Mike:
If it's truly a "sticker" I wouldn't be too worried about it. When I picked up my low mileage (18K when I got it) '91 C4 I went on what amounted to be a witch hunt on any and all evidence that the mileage was fake or the car was the product of a chop shop. Needless to say, this paranoid "investigation" was based heavilly on various serial numbers and stickers. Porsche definately has some "normal" places they put ID (for example on the fan pillar for the engine SN), but through the years they seem to have adopted a a sort of half-assed ID procedure based on stickers which seem to be placed throughout the car, are of quality that can range from crude to excellent, and almost always fall off over time. My guess is these are put there for service personnel so they can identify what exactly they're working with, as they don't seem to be "officially" documented. On my C4, all the numbers refereneced on my cheesy stickers match the hard pressed (official) numbers, but there is not a book on Earth (that I've found) that documents what these are. I've often wondered whether or not the dealerships were supposed to use these for product verification and then pull them off but never did. Good Luck, Bill Wagner |

Hello
This "Sticker" sits on the undersude of the engine toward the rear end. These Stickers come Stock to help identifing stolen car parts. According to US laws ? ( or Insurance wishes ?) Porsche also had to mark nearly all "important" detachable parts like Sheetmetall, Bumpers, Even new replacement parts have the stickers. Also there are other stickers to help identify the origin from the part manufactorer or coded for Special equipment. But those don´t bear a DOT Approval sign ....... Grüsse |
