Just coming back from the Porsche dealer.
Paid about 120 $ for a set of exhaust gaskets (6x heat exchanger, 2x pre-muffler, 1x muffler) plus the 6 in-hex nuts. Grrr. Got a genuine Porsche plastic bag for free to carry. What a deal. Its like tear 100$ notes to pieces throwing them into the wind tunnel of an air cooled flat 6! Just needed to vent. Jens |

screwed would be anunderstatement in my opinion. That's not outrageous...thats insane.
Why didn't you go with a mail order place like Pelican or Vertex? Were you in a hurry? I have never stepped foot on a Porsche dealer and probably will never do so. I'd consider a dealership to me my absolute LAST resort for parts. |

Lee,
You should always check. Believe it or not I bought a porsche oil filter from a local dealer that was alot cheaper than any mail order place I checked. ------------------ Daryl 91C2 Targa |

Pelican Parts probably would have save you a bunch even with overnight ups. Some dealer items are very reasonable, but gaskets are not usually one of those.
Shop till you quit dropping unecessary funds! Diverdan |

Jens,
The problem you have is that I believe you are in Denmark? The VAT (sales value added tax) is 25% at this time in Denmark and when you add this to the import customs it gets a bit high. Suggest that you get a copy of "911 and Porsche World" and order your future parts from England, as their VAT is at least 10% cheaper and import duties should be cheaper. With the EEU up and running, there is no customs and duty between any of the other EEU countries. Have you also looked at buying direct from Germany? Flensburg or Hamburg are not that far South... Another idea is to find someone in the states and get them to help you. I help my old Dentist in Berlin several times a year by buying airplane parts here in the US and "giving" them to him. I post them to Germany and its still at least 50% cheaper than his buying it direct in Europe. There are no customs and duty on gifts (within reason that is), and in return he visits me and makes a gift of lots of good German bier and such. Saves both of us lots of money and we both are happy. One last option is to visit the US and come with a parts list. I have friends who do this from Europe and it pays for their vacation by buying things here in the US. Hope this gives you some ideas... Thanks Guys,
Actually I am living in P-Country Germany (16% VAT). The high Pound-DM ratio hinders this option as well, and getting parts from the US is somehow annoying (shipment costs etc.). But I will keep that in mind! I just felt somehow f___ed. Last time I ordered the heater hoses-they were 6 $ only! Now I am paying back on gaskets I guess. But I have the grin on my face again as I drove to work this morning with "Holy Sh_t". Jens '76 2.7 CIS with '73 body conversion ------------------ |

I have experienced the same thing. Bought an oil filter at almost double the price I later paid at the official Porsche dealer. One always have to check first I guess. Joeaksa I'm the one who "represents" Denmark here on pelicanparts. You're quite right that we have 25% VAT. Luckily when buying from Germany we don't need to pay danish VAT since we already paid the german 16% VAT. That was extremely important to me when I bought my 911 in Germany and brought it with me back to Denmark. |

Jens,
With light or small parts like exhaust gaskets and bolts and such, the cost of shipping is still not that expensive. When you have time, go on the Pelican parts site and price the stuff, double the cost to simulate duty, and then add $15 for shipping and I bet that it would still be 50% the price you paid. Only when you need the heavier things does the shipping costs become too expensive. Here in the US we have US Postal Service Global Express, and will ship light things to anywhere in the world in a reasonable time for under $15. When shipping from a business they have to put the actual resale value, and the local customs then charges you based upon this. When I ship some parts to friends I "give" them away and thus no duty. Still worth looking at... Mikkel, sorry about that... lived in Kopenhagen last year for 5 months and even with the 25% VAT love the place... were I to move there would do what you did and bring a car there from outside! A man I work with always buys his Porsches in England (usually imported left hand drive cars) and keeps it registered in England, but drives it in Roskilde... and the local tax people hate him but it saves him the price of the car in import duties... Take care, Joe |
