What do you guys consider hot for a 2.4T motor. I've never had a real problem but always wonder when I get stuck in traffic on hot day, or when I'm driving over a mountain pass (fast) on hot day.
At what point should I start slowing down, and at what point should I pull over? |

Hello there,
A good indication is what it says in the handbook - which is 265F if memory serves. So... being on the safe side, I'd get concerned if my engine went above 250F for any length of time. If your car is overheating in traffic, the first thing to do (assuming you've checked the obvious stuff like oil and fanbelt) is to check the timing. I've found its a real pain to set the static timing accurately on these engines, and even good shops often have the timing set too far advanced. Assuming that isn't at fault, you may want to recheck your fanbelt tightness, check that she's firing on all cylinders, and change the oil grade if she's got low oil pressure when warm. Still no good? You may try and peek at the oil cooler and see if its covered with oil and debris. Over the years, the oil collects debris and dust and can block the oil cooler quite effectively. Do bear in mind though that these are air-cooled cars, and the temp they run at varies according to the temp of the air. Good luck to you. - roGER (1973 911T CIS) |

210 is OK. 230 is pretty warm. 250 is too damned hot. Roger's post is good advise.
