Speedometer Cable- Remove cable from housing?

A search has returned no answer to the question concerning removing the speedometer cable from its housing. Mine sat motionless for the six years of my car's rehabilitation program, and now makes an intermittent and loud WAPWAPWAPWAPWAP noise. Having read posts describing the difficulty of the replacement procedure for the cable and housing, I am inclined to try to extract just the cable, clean, lube, and reinstall. Anyone know if this is possible?

Dont know if your 70 is different than my 74 but...

Each end of the speedometer cable has a press on stop that would keep the cable from being remove from the housing.

Your millage may vary.

the factory cable had a replacable cable..and you could leave the housing in the car...ALL after market cables are crimpt on both end making it impossible to replace...The easy way to replace is to cut the big end off (trans end) and safty wire than tape to make smooth the newcable to the old and pull it up to the trunk..unclip cable at pedal box and tunnel first

So, it sounds like Doug had an aftermarket cable. Let's hope mine is original! I'll give it a shot this weekend. Thanks to you both.

Willhelm-
