Ok. my older post and here some photos of my left side chain box
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What do you think? How bad does it look? Does this tensioner look totally collapsed?

Well, I can't comment, as you have the older tensioners, but I'll bring it to the top for you. It's hard to tell. Do you have the the 'stop' devices on those tensioners?
Did you open the right side as well or did you determine that the sound was coming from the left side?

Per your video, I too think it's a collapsed chain tensioner. Classic audio symptoms.
Since you have the cover off, to confirm, use a long flat-blade screwdriver as a lever and try to lift the idler arm upward where it contacts the tensioner piston rod. It looks collapsed anyway, but if the rod or the idler arm can extend further, the oil has escaped from the tensioner. Either rebuild or replace the tensioner. Most owners replace with the later "Turbo" chain tensioners or the pressure-fed tensioners that appeared in 84'-on 911s. Check your budget, then proceed. BTW, the other side soon follows. It's also recommended to change to the '81-on idler arm with wider pivot bushings. Some say the narrow bushing idler arms exacerbate tension failure. Sherwood |

well, when I was checking the left side I did the what you said with the screwdriver lever and yes the sprocket moved like 5mm. so this is it, right? the right side looks ok; at least better than the left side.
here are some photos of the tensioner unpressed. ![]() ![]()

here are some photos of the tensioner unpressed." It appears so. BTW, the right side tensioner will soon follow. You may wish to repair/replace both at the same time. In addition, keep an eye on the proximity between the idler arm and the chain box housing. The tensioner normally extends to compensate for wear in the idler arm/chain system. If it gets too close to the housing, especially on the left side, that might indicate a worn chain and/or sprocket(s). Sherwood |

I wouldn't have even bothered taking the photos - I would have just replaced those tensioners with the Carrera kits...
I have them in stock, on the shelf (they were getting difficult to find, so I bought out my supplier's remaining stock). -Wayne

It looks like your hose is split and frayed in the 2nd picture.
