Turbo on a 2.7 cis
 
Is it possible to install a turbo with .5 bar at a 1974 2.7 CIS, without compromising durability?

Given the temperment, and unreliability of the 2.7, I think you would better finding a turbo motor.

I had a 73.5T 2.7 CIS. Ran GREAT (after a rebuilt and dialed in the cams).

A friend and I were discussing this very suggestion.

I was extolling the virtues of the 2.7
Nice low compression
my freshly rebuilt motor with new timeserts
adapt a 930 manifold etc.

He reminded me that the 2.7 mag cases don't like heat. You'd need a NASA Surplus heatsheild to keep the motor in one piece wouldn't you?? http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

Funny you should ask, I spoke with a local PCA member this past week end. He has had a turbo on his 75 Carrera for the last 20 yrs. He says he is running .5 bar, the engine has been rebuilt once in that time. Beautiful car, looks like new.

I think this is doable if you keep the boost down and have good cooling. The heat generated will be short lived - most turbo owners don't stay on boost for more than a few seconds at a time. Thermol reactor heat was constant.

Bill - what type of fuel delivery did he use on the '75? Stock early 930? Now you can go with EFI for more power and even better drivability.

Thats exactly my point....low boost low heat...increase some power.
How many hp should I get out of this?
What cam mods can I do?

The temperature increase in 1.5 boost (assuming 70% efficiency of compressure) is about 18% in kelvin (about 54 degrees C). This results in a total increase in air density after boost of about:

Density increase = 1.5/1.18 = 1.27

Therefore would get a 27% increase in air density which would result in about 27% increase in horsepower assuming your CIS system can supply the fuel.

RarlyL8,stock cis, the setup looks nothing like the factory setup, it is neat and professionally done, wish I took a pic.

I'd sure like to see some pix of that myself. The stock CIS for the N/A cars is configured differently than for the 930. Not much room for an intercooler. There is a picture of possibly this very setup in an old (~ circa 1978) Turbo book that I have. The system uses the stock CIS with no intercooler. I came across this type of system for sale by a private individual about a year ago. He had puchased it used and had never installed it. I passed because it wasn't complete.

I am planning something along these lines for my next project, based on my present '78SC 3.0L. This is down the road (I still have to get the 3.3T into the SC) but be assured that I will post the project.
