Tailpipe smoke

Hi All,
I just purchased an 89 911 coupe a few days ago. The car is in great condition and has 46k documented miles. The car does not normally smoke and has no leaks. Yesterdday I was doing some low speed driving around town with some traffic. All of a sudden, there was a big cloud of smoke coming from the tail pipe which lasted for about 2 blocks. It seemed like all of a sudden oil was dumped into the cylinders. I continued to drive the car with varying speeds and the car acted normally with no smoke. Any ideas on what this could be? Possibly a stuck oil pressure relief valve?

Thanks,
Chas

Check the oil level first. This symptom usually occurs when people have overfilled the oil tank. Engine has to be at full operating temperature, running (idling for a minute, at least) on level ground and checked with the dipstick, not the gauge.

So,

Did you check the oil level?
