engine temp
 

I have a question about engine (oil) temperature. I have an 87 911. My temp gauge reads right at or just above the first white mark during normal driving. I was at a D.E. event and my temp. started climbing to around the second white mark. I couldn't tell for sure if the front oil cooler fan had turned on but I don't believe it did. I asked one of the PCA guys about it and he told me my temp. was normal. Anyone know when I should start worrying about temperature? At what point should my fan kick in and is there a way to test to see if my fan/thermostat is working properly?

As I recall your fan turns on at either 240 degrees or 250 degrees. I think this is at the second mark.

Bruce Anderson says 250 degrees is TOO HOT.

He suggest getting a thermo- switch from one of the water cooled POrsches I think he mentions either a 928 or a 944 as their fans turn on at 200 degrees.

A good way to tell if oil is getting to the front cooler is to simply feel the fender above the cooler. It will be very warm if oil's getting there. The fan is set to trigger at a fairly high temp but I don't remember exactly what it is but it's in Bruce Anderson's excellent book, I believe. If you want me to look it up when I get home send an email.
