Header & muffler HELP
 

I have an 87 Carrera that is modified with 3.4 euro pistons & cylinders, C2 cams, Mass flow and some other neat things. I would like to drop the heat and put on some bursch headers (1 5/8") that I plan to have Jet-Hot coated and a new muffler. Does any one have any practical experience with bursch headers and is there any advice on a decent, non-resonating muffler. I am thinking of an OE style muffler with dual outs (already have the passengerside valance cut) would love some feedback and sources or other options.

Aren't those headers a bit small for that displacement engine? I thought the 1-5/8" size was more for 2.0-2.7 motors.

From what I understand, they are a good compromise for keeping low end driveability and torque while sacrificing a bit of screeaming top end h.p.

You might want to consider a set a supertrap arrangement for an exhaust. I will be putting that setup on my car very soon.

The 1 5/8" headers with ~34" primary tubes is a good setup for the 3.4 engine. The factory used 42mm which is a tad larger for the 3.6 liter RS. IMHO Bursch is junk and should not be on a Porsche. GHL and B&B both make nice headers in that size. I have B&B on my car and am quite pleased with it. They both allow the use of heat. Supertraps are nice in that they allow the end user to adjust the sound quality. B&B mufflers are reasonably quiet and non resonant when new but have a propensity to crack and they are less willing to stand behind their product than they used to. I am now using a Fabiani(won't by another B&B muffler after the last conversation I had with them) it is loud and has resonance, in a nice aggressive way. Some have reported tryin Flowmaster crossflows with good success, at least they are very cheap relative to the usual products available for 911's. Here is a pic of the B&B headers on a 3.6 liter with the Fabiani. The 2.5" ss pipes still needed to be cut and welded and the stock heat hooked up. Fabiani tips are the nicest I have seen!!

Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods said that the Bursch headers were the only ones that actually made less horsepower over stock when they ran them on the dyno.

Someone asked where can you get Supertrapps. I have seen them in the Summit Racing catalogue, but do not know if that is the best possible price.

I don't know about the headers, but for a muffler, I would go with the GHL. definatley a top notch muffler. I'm very pleased with the quality and sound of mine, and a few others on the board have them as well.

hey bill verberg, How does that muffler work for you? I have a 72 911 with a rs motor. I just had basani build me a muffler like the one your showing. I can't tell, but are the inlets on oposite sides from one another? That's the way i had mine built. I have yet to have it installed. This set up was a big crap shoot in my mind until i saw this post. Can you tell me more about your muffler? Mine has 2 1\4 inlets and 2 1\2 outlets. mine is built with the inlet pressure colliding with one another. Not two seperate mufflers crammed into one. The guy who built it sayed this will act like a crossover pipe, plus it will quiet the sound down. Also have the borla tips with the fins on the inside to cool down the gases thus helping in the reduction in back pressure. Not sure if this thing will work but what the hell. Mine is also only 14" long

lsolon, I didn't get much of a look inside but it was supplied by Joe Fabiani is ss with 2x2.5" inlets and 2x2.5" outlets. It is loud with a nice gurgle? but can be kept quiet by judicious use of throttle and gears, reminds me of a GTO I had a few decades ago.

Thanks for the post, I cancelled my order for the bursch headers today. I like the ideas posted so far. Will keep gathering more info.
