LSD Unit Tear Down
 

Just picked up a used LSD (limited slip unit only, not the entire transaxle) from a G50 trans. Wanted to open it up to inspect it to see what type, how many plates it has, level of wear, etc. It has three large phillips type screws holding the unit together. What tool does one use to loosen these fasteners?

A phillips type screwdriver?
Got a pic?

I have a pretty big and robust phillips, did not check the # on it. Seems about right, maybe a tad small. The screws are in very tight or with loctite. Cannot budge them. Do not want to destroy the screwdriver nor the mar the screwe to make it more difficult to untighten. I assumed they get torqued down. Thinking there might be a bit for a ratched or some other tool. I'll post a photo of the screws.

I think you're gonna want a "nut driver" for that. It's a widget that turns a screw when you whack it with a hammer...no, I'm not kidding. It adjusts both for tightening & loosening. A good tool emporium or MC shop should have one.

Actually, I think I have one of those somewhere, not sure it has the phillips bit however. Also, I would need an extension...do they support those...I recall it has a bulky barrel that would not get into that space...

Impact driver they are called. Not sure about an extention because there usually bigger than the standard hex type of bits

here is one from Sears Says it comes with a #2 #3 and #4 bits.

Thanks. I'll check that out. Do not think that tool shall get in there, but it looks like it might allow a 1/2" extension to be attached.
