WOW... thats a nice chest... the yellow one, not the guy!
Mine: A little disorganized at the moment, but it will get better after the car is running. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208137821.jpg Your most frequently used items should be 'right there', obviously. I keep all my sockets on socket rails by drive size and # of sides (6 vs. 12). I have cut the rails down to fit the number of sockets per set. I chose this method over the in drawer organizer as I am frequently under the cars and I like to take a whole set with me in case I have guessed the wrong size or need more than just one. Metric is above inch as I have three German cars... ok 2 1/2 (Chrysler mini van used to be Daimler :) ) All the socket wrenches, extensions, wobble adapters, etc. are kept in one place and at the waist height for easy access. Pliers and assorted grabbers of all ilks are right below the socket wrenches. Box end and twin end wrenches are just below the sockets. Those are the most used items and I try to keep them where I don't have to stoop to get the drawer open and look for something. The chest is from Harbor Freight. IT is a nice piece and I got it on sale with a 20% coupon (each piece over a 6mo. period). I like it a lot and it has served me well for 4 years. Much heftier than the Craftsman or Kobalt stuff I looked at. The bench is 2" maple butcher block dining table that my collage mate let me 'borrow' ... 10 years ago ;) I got some industrial legs from MSC and built the peg board and shelf with integrated electrical, lighting, and air. I thought I would use the peg board more, but don't. I hang odd shaped stuff there and some big hammers. The wipe board is a nice thing to have to scrawl measurements on or notes like, "I need a new XXYY." If I had to do it over I would have moved it all to another wall where I could have more room. You will not that the nose of the car leaves my skinny ass only a few inches behind the workspace. It is a nice seat, though a little short. Best regards, Michael |

That looks like a Costco toolbox . Someone here offered the Porsche decal for that line of boxes . Went and did a search , info here > http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-928-used-parts-sale-wanted/393490-porsche-tool-box-decal-costco-stainless-tool-box.html?highlight=costco+tool+box SxS |
If you want to see pics of toolboxes, here you go. This will take quite some time to view, but there are some truly amazing boxes in the thread (unfortunately, none of them mine- but I am working on it) http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=466

This is what I had in mind. A friend sent me this of his box, a deep drawer with sockets on racks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208174445.jpg How about the wrenches, does everyone have them on racks also? Len :) |
Here's my 3000 square foot tool box. :D
And no, the key isn't hidden under the front door mat........ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208185609.jpg |

I've got several Kennedy boxes [7 drawer and 3 drawer machinists chests], as well as a carry-around metal Craftsman box and a 4 x 8 pegboard.
Despite this, the most-used tools are usually in cardboard boxes on the garage floor near the car. The tool boxes are good for storage, but for working on the car nothing beats the floor and/or an easy-to reach shallow cardboard box. One tip: I've found the "clip strip" socket holders valuble for keeping my sockets, including crowfoot sockets, hex drivers, extensions & etc. organized and readily at hand. I haven't really found a good way to keep open-end and combination wrenches well organized, except to hang them on a pegboard. The pouches alway seem to tear after a relatively short time. |
