Hello,
i want some advice here if possible, we have this 1986 Carrera that we bought (ab)used for very cheap because it has a destroyed engine and tranny, what happened to this car was a mis-shift from 4th gear to 1st gear, as a result the engine block is trash and the tranny's bellhousing is cracked, i like some advice on which engine/tranny combo would be the ideal to swap into this car, i saw in this forum an unbelievable nice blue Porsche with a 3.9 RSR engine and 6 speed tranny, so that told me that (with enough $$$) anything is possible. We have plans for modifying the suspension and brakes on this car also. Thanks in advance |

And the question is how much time and money do you want to spend?

It all depends, but we understand that it will not be cheap

Thats why they call it the Money shift!
The possibilities are end less, depends on the budget.

Our main concern isn't how expensive it is, but how difficult is to swap different engine/tranny combos, besides the electronics, we want to know what fit and what doesn't, turbo engines are out of the question because besides the engine we have to start worrying about the intercooler, plumbing, etc. We want a clean, powerful swap, and compatible with some suspension/brake mods.
The questions should be "if this was your car, and without worrying too much of costs, what would you build?" Last edited by pabust; 04-10-2008 at 12:27 PM.. |

Again, it goes back to the $$$$$$$$
If its budget no problem ... then the possibilities are endless.. you could do a 3.6 to 3.8 build with throttle body EFI, and a 6pd trans. Or you can put a 996 water cooled engine in it. I If you've got the money, don't worry about the difficulty to build.. pick the shop, drop it off, and stroke the check. There are a lot of capable shops that post here on Pelican and I'm sure someone here is more than capable of creating your fantasy 911! Now if you just need an engine and tranny to get it down on the road again while you figure out your performance direction.. I may have just what you need. P-

Do you know a shop that sells a sort of "engine swap kit" for the 911 that includes every nut and bolt needed for the swap? Or the other option is to buy a replacement 3.2 block and 915 tranny and call it a day, anyone recomended for this besides Motor Meister? i've read a lot of bad stuff from him |

Yeah, avoid the Meister like the plague. You should be able to get the bellhousing of the tranny welded up by a local shop that can weld aluminum...the 1986 915 is a great transmission and is worth saving. The most common and easiest swap for these cars are for a 3.6 liter from a 1989-98 model 911. 1989-94 engines are cheaper but mostly OK (watch out for cylinder head leaks thru '91), 1995 adds hydraulic lifters and a bit more power, 1996-98 adds Varioram which adds a bit more power still. This is a very clean, easy swap that can still use your 915 tranny...do a search for "3.6 swap" You must use the quotes or the search won't work. There are complete swap kits out there, hopefully some one will chime in with a recommendation. A 3.6 in the older, lighter 911s is a blast!
What country are you in? Always nice to hear about 911s in different countries. Last edited by jkarolyi; 04-10-2008 at 01:15 PM.. |

![]() i love chile (most of SA for that matter!) i spent some time there with my now ex-girlfriend in 2003 engine options are endless...if you want to keep it original you could get a 3.2 (or go to 3.4 with new pistons) next step (more $) is a 3.6...my choice would be a V-Ram which can be adapted th suit the 915 the no-holds-barred option is an RSR-style 3.9 on PMO carbs or EFI ![]() check out matteo's build here: 3.9 RSR project --- my Carrera reborn good luck and keep us posted on the build! cheers, JV

I've been checking them... seems to make good parts, anyone has any experience with them? i ask because i've had horrendous experiences with two american companies (Russ Arao and HP Performance) and now i want to be 100% sure that the companies i deal with are reputable ones. |

Yes, he is reputable and quite a few people here have his kits. Looks like he has grown that business a lot recently.
He has a"real" job also - he is a prof. at the univ. with two appointments. You should check and see re timelines, shipping, and the degree of modification you want for several places. Is there anywhere closer that mods 911 engines? Mexico? PR? |

Sorry for resurrecting this post, but i've had some bad luck with instant-g, i know the guy is a professor at the University and that leaves him very little free time, but i need to buy the Varioram engine, 915 (or G50) tranny and the whole swap kit ASAP, is there another reliable alternative company that offer top quality products that someone can recommend me? what i need is a complete kit that includes the engine and all the little parts that goes into the swap.
Thanks in advance for any help |
