Quality of fit on fiberglass rear decklids?

So I'm looking to replace the duck on the back of my car with a flat decklid. I had one from a '73 that I parted out years ago, but after trying to fit it to the car yesterday, it turns out it was as bent as the car it came off of. Sooo...now I'm going back to the original plan of fitting an aftermarket fiberglass piece, but I'm concerned about fitment. What are the chances that I'll get a decklid that will fit right out of the box? I know fiberglass parts are notorious for needing additional fit, but this has to be on of the simplest parts to shape...how bad can it get?

I'd like to just buy a lid, make sure it fits, then hand it over to a paint shop for painting, then I can install it and any grills or badging, etc.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

I think you could score a steel lid for not that much money and be off to the painter a lot sooner. You know as well a I that FG lids tend to need some work before painting. Fitting is only half of it.

That's what I'm afraid of. Looks like it's off to the classifieds for me...

Doug I didn't even see that you had a new car! Congrats on that and regarding the decklid I think if you want a perfect fit you should look at steel. The steel decklids can be had surprisingly cheap. I have a steel decklid and will be buying a duck at some point. I looked at an MA Shaw lid this weekend on Jeff Alton's car, he pointed out the large panel gaps even on a well made duck like his. With some work it could look pretty good with some work.

Thanks Jess...yeah, the new car kinda came up on us. One of the rare times "timing" worked out for me instead of against me.

I really want a good fit, so I think I'll be shopping for a good used steel lid for a while. A quick look shows they're out there...but also that they get snatched up quickly!

Doug-

I have a very nice stock decklid from a '74 911S that you can have for $200 plus shipping. Grille not included.

Curt-

Hope all is well with you. I'm sorry I didn't stop by and say 'Hi' at that last track day at SOW w/ the R Gruppe. I was pretty busy shaking down my new toy.

If Doug doesn't get the eBay one, ending in 3 days, I'll let you know by email.

Thx,
TT
